The others... they've changed.
We no longer sing in unison.

I base my personality around various media and some abstract idea of misery. (That's informative enough, right?)

My activity here nowadays is a hit-or-miss type of deal, and besides that, I'm more than content with the buds I've made and the friendships I've cultivated over the last [n] months and counting. Bear that in mind just in case.

Additional deets in the pin if you want 'em. It's really just more of an addendum to the Music segment, though. If our tastes are strikingly similar, mmmmaaaaaybe consider adding me? /shrug

Who I'd like to meet:

Cool people. Or, to put that in more detail; anyone with shared interests looking to actually interact. I am, however, a bit too picky for my good sometimes. Don't take it the wrong way if I decline your req.

Who I'd rather not meet:

TL;DR: <18/>30, friend collector(!), private profiles, insufficiently alternative (you're free to interpret this one however y'want). If I accept your req despite falling into one of these blocks, I'm open to trying to interact with you, but I may end up unfriending you down the line anyhow. Please bear that in mind. NSFW stuff's fine, though it's not the kind of thing I discuss or shoot the shit about publicly (duh, I suppose).

On the off-chance that I decline your req, it's never meant out of malice; only basic conflict of taste / interest / whatever. Blocks are a different matter entirely, though.

1. How much would do you think you could chuck if you could chuck wood?
2. You list whistling as an interest-- what's your skill level? Black belt? Neophyte? General manager?

1. presumably a fair amount, but nowhere near as much as Chuck Norris
2. what's the karate belt equivalent of 'average, perhaps a smidgen above average'? blue or thereabouts? that'd be applicable. i don't excel at it, i think—it's a spare-time ordeal after all—but i'm good enough to make a few ears tingle. though i continue to struggle with pitch for no good reason tbh.

have you heard the live, Dance version of Tusk? feel like Lindsey is an even wilder character here than on the studio version.

by Ikoe; ; Report

I hadn't heard this version, and I will now give an approximate transcript of my train of thought listening to this version:
Hm, this is like 5 production choices away from being an emo song... oh never mind, he just summoned the marching band. I wonder how hard it is to mix the live sound of like 50 people with marching band instruments with like 5 or 6 people with rock instruments? ...Boy he's really wailing, huh?

If you could choose to have the power to summon one large marching band or one Fleetwood Mac at will, what's your choice? Assume that the marching band is excellent at what they do, and the Fleetwood Mac is them in their prime with all members alive. The choice is difficult for me because the marching band would be better for goofs and pranks (and if I needed a large body of vaguely athletic people for some reason) but Fleetwood Mac would be good for... Stevie Nicks jumpscare?

  • I have decided that from now on I'm gonna try and steer away from talking to you on discord as much. I know you've been open about losing interest in spacehey with how dead the platform has been in general, but I like it here more and I feel that one of the reasons that the platform has lost intrigue is because we have access to the same characters over discord. I get it, as I've been using spacehey on autopilot for a good few months now without really engaging, but I've come to miss it. I like leaving comments for you only to have Jason jump in the middle of the conversation to make a joke or be pedantic. I love doing the same thing the other way around. I like being able to see the conversations that I would never know to have unfold in front of me at the behest of those who know to have them. I like seeing your profile and specific aesthetic tastes, as if I'm visiting your home to have a cup of tea. Discord can't give me any of that and it feels like I've become trapped by the convenience of it all.

  • I rewrote my main profile description for the first time in around two years and now the text stretches over a darker portion of the image on my profile, which has nuked the previously serviceable contrast ratio. I tried making the background-color for the p element there white for an effect like slide 16 here, but it made the entire block white instead of just highlighting the words with white, which was very displeasing. Just wondering if you know of a good approach for trying to fix sumn like this?

  • I've been impressed by your use of html tags for a while and seeing rosco use them off the bat starting on the site and the use of them on vex's profile have made me feel obligated to use the tools that I've been given to me instead of just being impressed, but know that you are the source of this competence envy.

  • I'm thinking about starting a fast and loose little spacehey collective, kinda like a webring(?), for sharing the neat things on spacehey the go beyond just having a cool profile. Stuff like the movie club, At Night™, a special sumn I'm in the planning stages of, and another secret project which I have become privy to but am uninvolved in, etc. I'm going around and consulting the would-be early invites to this collective and asking for thoughts on 1st, a name for the group and 2nd, ideas on how to organize it. In terms of organization, I'm currently thinking that the requirement to have your project included would be to link to the other pages directly somewhere mildly visible on your project, but that might get messy if we grow past even a half dozen or so projects, so maybe it would be best to have a central hub and just require linking to that? Perhaps just name dropping the collective and not linking at all to be kinda mysterious and gatekeepy would be fun? Idk, which is why I'm asking.

  • To conclude, a signature fawkes q, do you have a favorite animal? If so, tell me about it.

i hate discord

for what you told me to come here for:

call it something reductive, like "sticky note" or "town square". simple, unassuming, but also describes what the purpose is (to be a little reminder (to use spacehey)(some people need that lmao) or because in the internet town of spacehey, your idea could be a/the little central place where the merchants and street performers and people just hanging out are)

i am a fan of a profile as a group, just as smc. there you can link everything fine, describe it all, etc... and of course the sticky note or the town hall or whatever you come up with can have a certain feel to it. for conversing in the group, i could see just making threads under a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly (depending on busyness) blog post to go well.

by iason; ; Report

I will say that the main reasons I'm reluctant to set up a profile are that:

  1. It's very centralizing. Someone owns the account and even if they share the password, someone owns the email and even if they share the password, someone owns the recovery email or in my case, the mail server. That works well for smc because you and I live in the same house and as much as I could theoretically pull the account out from under you, the streaming portal is on your server and could just as easily be pulled out from me. Letting the individual projects choose how to structure their plugs to the others feels more free to me and like a freedom that flows both ways.

  2. If we do a profile, that means I have to make a profile to my own standards instead of working on the project I want to work on. And with my standards for spacehey profiles, that's a big time sink.

That's not to say that I've rejected the idea entirely, I just have concerns. But perhaps someone has an idea to remedy them, hence my asking around.

by Fawkes; ; Report

Jumpin' in on this very old comment thread to give unwarranted thoughts:

1. I really wish SpaceHey Groups had an exclusivity option
2. It could just be a link-only blog post where people comment in new projects. But then there's the hell of moderating what comes in.
3. Externally linking to a Google Docs or other multiple-people-working-on-the-same-thing service. This sucks because A) external linking and B) collecting emails
4. If only SpaceHey had JS, then it COULD be a webring. If SpaceHey had JS it would also be a nightmare so I'm glad it doesn't. But perhaps, with some iframe bullshittery, something pretty much like a webring could be used? (but it would have to be hosted elsewhere. gross.)
5. Actually. I'm having an idea... what about something like this?

by Pory; ; Report

Oh my god it worked in WYSIWYG for a beautiful fleeting moment and then broke as soon as it was actually posted. I forgot that SpaceHey only allows embeds from a scant few sites, not including SpaceHey itself. Leaving this up in case it sparks any better ideas and also so as not to ghost-ping Ikoe ('pologies)

  • this is somewhat depressingly real. i'm not sure if it'll get me to reengage much here, admittedly, but it does strike a nerve. i hear you and will try to be at least a bit more active.
  • this bullet point appears to be irrelevant now, but i fuck with the rewrite fwiw. bold of you to label DEFCON as a 'beatable' game though. although i suppose you wouldn't be entirely wrong...
  • it's all about unnecessarily styling, baby. all about staring at individual parts 'n' tags and thinking how you could fuck around with them. between that and obsessive MDN doc reading, there really ain't much to it.
  • >name for the group
no thoughts, head empty. (that's not a suggestion or anything, i legit just don't know. bark up a smarter tree.)
    >ideas on how to organize it
    very carefully.
central hub sounds stable enough. i'm operating on the semi-pessimistic assumption that it probably wouldn't be a particularly large collective at first (or perhaps later, either) so you wouldn't have to worry too much about overcrowding, in terms of members or info or whatever else.

IKOE:

Before we begin, I'd like you to know that I didn't get a notification that you had replied here -- I hear spacehey is having notification problems in general rn -- so I saw your bulletin and nearly sent you a sassy comment. I typed the whole thing up before thinking to check how recently you had posted the bulletin, which got me to check your profile, showing that you have responded, so no bulletin response!

(Especially because you were around for one of my more recent influential personal escapades, so I have less to say to the specific prompt of the bulletin.)

In case you're curious though, here's my snarky response, "I have a whole list of things to talk to you about but I've been saving it for when you reply to my spacehey comment!"

Responses:

  • Honestly with how slow things have been on spacehey lately, a slow pace is still very fine as long as it's just a bit faster than it has been recently. We'll still be doing halo and I'm sure we'll chit-chat some on discord, so it's not like we're spacehey ride or dies.

  • (I am totally copying your style with formatting here. It just works so well.)
    >Rewrite
Yeah... Personally I wanted to stick with the HanaBi layout for a while longer, but it become important to me that I get the content rewrite done soon and trying to make all that extra text fit with the already janky layout was just too much.
    >DEFCON
So far I've only beaten the tutorial of DEFCON and a player who didn't even do the tutorial. "Beaten" for my purposes will be finding a match that feels about equally skilled and winning it.

  • EOL

  • >group name
Tbh the two suggestions I've liked the most are Jason's "town square" and my own "let us eat spacehey." Between them, I think the phrase "this is a town square project" rings way better than "this is a let us eat spacehey project" , so I think that'll end up being the name of the central space when I end up making it, unless anyone has objections. Actually, after writing "central space," I think it's my new favorite. Jason, Pory, Ikoe, -- Rosco, if you're here, -- please give me thoughts about these three names.
    >organization
yeah, as much as I liked the idea of encouraging a sort of free association here, I think I'm coming to understand that running this will ultimately be my project, so that defeats a lot of my reservations about having a central form. It'll probably be a spacehey profile as well. Also, your prediction that this collective will remain quite small isn't pessimistic, it's just realistic. I feel the same way but hope that if I can inspire just a person or two to make something interesting, spacehey will be better for it. Thanks Jason, Ikoe, Pory, -- Vex, if you're here, -- for the input.

  • EOL

Thoughts since I last commented:
  • I remember we had an interaction not too too long ago where i sent some music and you remarked positively on the use of chopped piano samples. I was listening to this album the other day and there is some damn fine piano chopping around 6 minutes in. You might like?

  • I started playing halo 3 with Tan10o, the IRL of mine who I had been playing halo 2 legendary with. Because halo 2 legendary coop always behaves as if the Iron skull is on, he insisted that Halo 3 legendary was too easy and that we needed to play with Iron even though I had already put on Tough Luck. What a mad lad, right?

Thoughts since I began writing this comment (what a wild ride it's been):
  • I have decided in the course of writing this very message that I'm going to start responding to individual points of the conversation with EOL to mark that I have nothing to say on that specific point, such that comparing response bulletin points to the message which they are responding to isn't confusing. It's also kinda 1337 since I chose EOL specifically because it's what the Master Control Program does in OG Tron. Thoughts?

  • I have a bit with a friend who I only communicate with over email where I will send them the word "email" on discord every time I send them an email, since discord is just such a good notification hub. Would you appreciate if I did that with comments here as a way to accommodate you becoming perhaps just a tad more active?

  • Do you think I can ever convince you to join Spacehey Movie Club? You don't have to dedicate to showing weekly to be a welcome member. We've got peeps who range from religious weekly attendance all the way to members who've never shown once. Signing up just gets you the scheduling info and if you ever feel like showing, we'd love to have you. Besides, someone needs to promote Beat Kitano's work in the club ;) .

Pory I am so sorry I haven't responded to you're input. I will get on it soon, but this message took me a while to write.

by Fawkes; ; Report

PORY:

  1. ME TOO BUDDY
  2. This suggestion is the closest to what I think this is going to end up as, except that it'll probably be a whole profile instead of a blog post. As I said in the last comment, I don't expect that we're going to be dealing with a huge amount of interaction with how slllooooooowww spacehey has been as of late, so the moderation wouldn't be an issue for me.
  3. Yeah, with the point of this being fostering activity on spacehey, linking somewhere externally is a no-go for me.
  4. I don't think you need coffeecode to have a webring. I don't understand what you're saying on this one really.
  5. Once again, I think this is close to what I am looking to implement, except that it'll all be on a profile front and center, instead of hidden in a blog somewhere.

by Fawkes; ; Report

my eyesight is getting so bad that i had to meticiously read this whole thread like three times over before i registered the collective name suggestions. gahhhhh. i'm booking an appointment with the optometrist right now.

hello everybody, by the way, sorry i haven't leaned in on this earlier, lot of life changes. gahhh to that too. but in a more positive way. i wish i were still in college so that i'd have more time to dedicate to these things. lord knows my own personal projects are suffering for it, let alone my spacehey

on the names... i always tend to lean towards something more fun and evocative, town square is sorta charming but i think reductiveness w the title won't do much for the group, i appreciate the symbolism behind it but i think from an outside point of view i'm just gonna think everybody in this town square is boring, and this site in general is boring. if it's to be a place to champion the virtues of a place like this, then i think it may be a apt choice to go for something a bit more outstanding.let us eat spacehey is more fun and colorful, but at the same time hits a bit of a corner and sounds really artsy, 17th century french vibes on my spacehey.. i dunno. central space i like, it does sound like a collective, like this cabal is at the heart of the site. and its short and snappy and drives curiosity into who this central space is. so i think its the most effective option out of those proposed.

likewise(!!), but also condolences off the bat. it may or may not have been courtesy of the 'reflections' option in the video settings; i'm on an RTX 40xx but having that thing enabled made my fans whirr like all hell at one point. could unironically be an enabled-by-default raytracing option which is kinda bizarre, especially given the ambiguity.

but i digress.

so, so, so fucking good. i'm 100-something floors into Tartarus with a half-completed compendium and i'm loving every moment of it. the evolution and smoothness of the combat system, a bulletproof new voice cast (save maybe for Akihiko's VA; i do miss him having a certain vulnerability to his tone, before), a CONCERNINGLY gorgeous UI anywhere you go, an OST that doesn't stray far from the original while still giving it a clean 'n' crispy sheen, just... such a profoundly nice experience on all fronts. takes me back to the early pandemic era when i was stuck in my room obsessing over Portable's NG+ and making bonkers fusions.

once they add The Answer as a DLC—and, god willing, maybe even the FeMC route, although the possibility of that one's regrettably low—it will jump to the top of my GOAT list + dethrone Portable as my go-to way of playing the game (no shade on FES because it still gets the upper hand in terms of interactivity and storytelling by... simply not being a glorified VN, but i do like direct command and all the QoLs that came with 3P). but even now, as-is, it just feels and plays really goddamn good. no regrets over taking the plunge and preordering it a day after it was available.

it's been relatively bland (and shockingly snowy) so far, but that's more of a pro than a con. grabbed skyrim's quasi-remaster on sale w/ the anniversary thing that comes with all the creation club jazz and it's been pretty great so far. feels nice playin' that thing while also bothering to give a crap about its world-building and characters. makes all the difference in the world (heh).

is BG3 worth grabbing if i normally find myself somewhat bored by RPGs that play pretty deeply into DnD schticks? everything i've seen from it looks so good but i'm worried i'd tap out sooner or later

i feel like i've heard so much about skyrim yet nothing at all.

bg3 is overall an interesting game, i was pretty doubtful when i wanted to buy it myself because i generally get pretty bored with most rpg's quickly, with or without dnd schticks, but i've been liking it so far and there's a lot of different ways to play the game so it never really feels boring (to me). and it has a lot of interesting and fun content (it's even more fun when you find the dumbest ways to cheese the game).
i'd say you should check it out but maaaybe wait until it's on sale if that's possible, in case you're too worried about not finding it enjoyable.

have you ever thought about crows? i’m very interested in your opinion about crows

Report Comment

i do not actively think about crows, but i do think they're neat lil' creatures from the few irl interactions i had with 'em. feral pigeons tend to be more on my mind considering i run into several on the daily.

tangentially related story; back when i was still in uni, the apartment i was staying in turned out to have a nest on the balcony, and toward the end of my first semester, i got to watch two baby pigeons growing up on the daily. something about that on-the-side experience (and the tragedy that followed; one of the two ended up with a fractured(?) wing, passing away overnight) grounded me in a way i still can't express. had to put up with a lot of bird poop though. no fun in that.

favorite pre-2000 Nic Cage film, if any? rewatched Snake Eyes recently and i still think Rick's up there among his finest starring roles.

by Ikoe; ; Report

the pigeons i run into these days are the most unbothered and calm creatures, they’ve probably gotten so used to humans by now judging from the way they don’t even fly away anymore when i get too close.

very sad to hear about the baby pigeon that died :( i was expecting you to tell me it fell off and died though so i mentally prepared for the worst already.

i’ve never watched any of nic’s pre-2000 movies but from what i just saw (i had to google) snake eyes looks interesting. the earliest movie of his i’ve seen is national treasure, i liked it a lot as a kid since i was always into adventure movies.

If someone challenged you to a duel and you each got to pick a video game in which to 1v1, what would you pick and what would you hope they don't pick.

Report Comment

either Quake III or Audiosurf 2 (even though the latter's a bit of a shaky pick), and Literally Any Other Fast-Paced, Present-Day Shooter, respectively. yourself?

by Ikoe; ; Report

There are no games out there that I can say I'm in the upper echelons of, so my initial thought wasthat I would pick something obscure enough that the other person just wouldn't be able to figure it out (assuming the duel begins immediately with no time to practice). So my first thought for my pick was a weird ps1 game I've played with my mom called Intelligent Qube, but then it occurred to me that my opponent could just pick a game I've never played in retaliation, so maybe I wouldn't do that. I guess I can't answer my own question without knowing what kind of prep time we have before the duel. Wanna set a standard and I'll get back to you on it?

i think like 12 hours is enough. any more and you're giving the other player too much of an advantage; any less and you're giving yourself too much.

by Ikoe; ; Report

I think hexcells infinite's random puzzles would have to be my pick. I am by no means the greatest in the world at them, but I do think I am pretty damn good and the puzzles build on two other games of skills, so I feel like I still have an advantage that couldn't be matched in twelve hours.

In terms of games I'd like to avoid, I think a game that is a really complicated shooter like arma or sumn would be the death of me. I don't have the raw mechanical skill to carry me, nor would I be able to learn all of the systems in time for the duel.

Would you like to reevaluate your response with this 12 hour window in mind, or was that the time frame you responded with in the first place?

by Fawkes; ; Report

Btw, why pick audiosurf if it's shakey? Is quake also kinda shakey, or would stylin on someone in audiosurf be worth the greater risk of loss?

by Fawkes; ; Report

response stays the same. re: audiosurf - it's... a lot riskier than a shooter would be, i think? if we're playing something speedy and upbeat on ninja (i.e. as2's "hard" mode), it eventually becomes very easy (for both of us) to fuck up and hit a spike, thereby losing the 'perfect stealth' bonus that's worth thousands of points. hell of an advantage, but high risk.

the song playing in the background is super nice, another song to add to my music library thanks to you. it sounds like something out of a movie soundtrack yet i can't quite figure out the vibes yet, there are multiple scenarios coming to my mind.

Report Comment

i've had that thought tickling the back of my head as well. kinda reminds me of the vibe some of Tangerine Dream's tracks had in Risky Business, but that's - at best - mildly unfitting. more than that, though, it reminds me of late '90s MIDI muzak if MIDI muzak was good and had more kick to it.

what's your library usually consist of these days?

by Ikoe; ; Report

"if MIDI muzak was good" made me giggle.

lately i've been mainly listening to cocteau twins and this one latvian song but i've been kind of feeling like not listening to anything at all and as someone who has a lot of playlists it's a bit surprising that nothing really speaks to me anymore but this is not the first time it has happened though, so i shall enjoy music fully soon (hopefully)

by s; ; Report

really gotta get off my ass and listen to something other than Heaven or Las Vegas. that album's great, to be sure, but i feel like i've been doing CT a disservice by not checking out the rest of their discography. maybe one day...

the quasi-fatigue is understandable. def had a few moments where my library was unprecedentedly filled to the brim with albums 'n EPs and yet none of it really clicked with me save for like one or two ambient releases or whatever. it's weird how that works. in any case, fingers also crossed in hopes your enjoyment comes back Soon™

by Ikoe; ; Report

fingers crossed that you DO check out other stuff from cocteau twins, though i can’t blame you, heaven or las vegas is great, but so are their other albums.

by s; ; Report

any personal recommendations? i'm seeing a lot of buzz around Treasure specifically, but i'll trust your judgement first and foremost.

by Ikoe; ; Report

i feel honoured, treasure is great so the attention it’s getting is deserved but something tells me you’d like the moon and the melodies

the kind words are appreciated; likewise. going over your interests while tackling my morning coffee and i couldn't help but smile at a handful of the entries. on that note—and i apologize in advance if this is, mayhaps, a bit overbearing at first;

  1. how we feelin' about Census Designated? the back-to-back between Holding a Leech and Backseat Girl remains one of the neatest i've heard in any recent shoegaze (or shoegaze-aligned) release. i've yet to check out the rest of Remover's discography, though. anything else you'd recommend from her?
  2. what, pray tell, actually is Mayura? i've seen her in the most obtuse of places (chief among them a desktop thread on some relatively esoteric all-topics board) but never really dug into her background/related media.
  3. which ending did you go with in DX and why is it (not) New Dark Age?
  4. partially stealing this one from a moot; what's your favorite RH Fever minigame a) by vibes and b) by gameplay?
  5. this one isn't actually a question but seeing your NiGHTS entry reminds me of the dumbest rants i've ever seen. i did a loop-de-loop, man, isn't that awesome, i got an A!!!!!

by Ikoe; ; Report

before i start let me just say you giving me all those questions gave me the one of the biggest dumb smiles i've had in a long time. i greatly appreciate you personalizing questions just for me. okay lemme start;

1. census designated is one of my favorite projects of the year so far. backseat girl initially did not stand out much to me, but has grown to be one of my favorite tracks on it. it has some of the most immersive songwriting of any of the tracks, by using a story consisting of backseat driving as a metaphor for taking charge in a relationship. the chorus is so catchy and infectious to me aswell lol

2. mayura is a ukagaka, or a computer ghost meant to be used with SSP. think of one of those desktop buddies you downloaded as a kid that were totally not viruses. (looking at you, bonzi buddy,) after a lack of popularity and the irrelevancy that came with it, she was discontinued and all files of her were wiped from the web. but as of recent, with the rise of y2k and revisiting of old jp web content, her popularity has blown up a ton. you can still download her through archive.org (i have her downloaded on the xp vm that i use to post on this very site!) there's tons of original ukagakas like her, and people even make their own custom SSP ukagakas!

3. i went and chose the helios like everyone else, sue me.

4. love rap 1 & 2 have to be my favorite minigames! mc adore is one of my favorite RH characters. gameplay would either be bossa nova with packing pests as a close second. tambourine will always be my least favorite due to me being frustrated with it when i was younger.... (¬、¬)

5. woah, now that's a throw back. i haven't thought about giant bomb in YEARS. that clip is hilarious, thank you for the laugh.

i apologize, for my formatting is not as neat as yours. i hope my comment isn't a big ugly box of words that are hard to read!

by kult; ; Report

oh, sorry, i forgot to mention, please listen to her last full length project fraility! if you enjoyed CD, you'll love what it was built upon. you should also check out her other alias, leroy. she makes very loud abrasive sample-based music that is very overstimulating if you're into that junk.

by kult; ; Report

i continue to stand by the belief that every well-laid-out profile contains a long, winding convo (or several) that's just waiting to happen.

  1. strongly agreed... if only because i haven't listened to much in the way of recent releases—it usually takes me a couple of years to come 'round for a lotta stuff. x)
part and parcel with my undying love for minimalism, i'd have to place Hall's rendition of Canto Ostinato at the zenith of my "stuff i liked from this year" list. the vibes and instrumentation tickle my brain perfectly.
also; threw Frailty into my to-listen list. expect a short rundown on that sometime Soon™. will leave Leroy on the side as more of a "if i have the time" thing.
  2. holy shit, this is a great lil' rabbit hole. the complexity of these things under the weave, the shocking amount of perfectly mid-aughts art drawn for 'em, the faux-IRC thing they had going on at one point—christ, even the fact that the IANA(!) assigned two of god's own ports to their TP. thoroughly endearing.
sometimes it feels shockingly easy to forget that there was a period when stuff like this was just kinda... normal? ish? not exactly the "programming cute ghosts to prance around on your desktop and casually communicate over officially-reserved ports" thing, to be clear, but moreso the part of doing all of this in the name of plain and simple (arguably even optimistic) fun. the XP era might not've been awfully advanced or secure, but god, there was definitely a predominant aura to it that's gone out of vogue ever since. shame. but i digress.
  3. ok yeah no that's fair. i place NDA on a pedestal because the concept of going "fuck you" to a dystopia by literally pulling the plug on it always seemed equally funny and satisfying, at least in the short-term. (i imagine it was, in one way or another, hell down the line.) Helios is realistically prolly the best ending when we put the silliness bias aside. lives up to the deus ex machina trope in what may be the most literal way possible and acts as one of the most uplifting endings in... any cyberpunk-coded piece of media since 1990, tbh? "we are our choices" goes so hard.
  4. coughed and gagged on my drink upon seeing Love Rap's name pop up but honestly i respect it. i think.
for me, Samurai Slice remains untouched. the equal-parts grin and frown that appeared on my face when i got jumpscared by The story so far... is hard to describe. perfect reflex test and joke.
  5. when i tell you that having Bombcast in the background while i worked my old job @ a call center kept my sanity intact, i MEAN it. a lot of the snippets between '08 and '15 are still really, really good; a level of chemistry that has yet to be matched by any other group of podcasters, past, present, or future. Jeff's rants are absolutely peak tho, especially the Yoshi stuff.

with regards to your outro: a rose by any other name—or, well, formatting in this case. all boxes of words are equally endearing and easy to read. unless you're actively typing in stacked <small> tags for whatever reason but that's neither here nor there :3

oh christ that's a lot of text

1. i'm definitely entry level when it comes to my experience with minimalism, but i've heard glassworks say 4 years ago when i was doing my usual dives into exploring genres that were new to me, and greatly enjoyed it. i hear familiar sounds reminiscent of it, so i'll definitely check this out! and yes, leroy i would definitely push to the side a little.

2. oh i completely agree. back when the internet and computers as a whole were a new and infantile, everyone was experimenting, finding out what works, what doesn't, and seeing what sticks. it resulted in a lot of creativity and eccentric webpages and programs that we would just call novelty and antiquated nowadays. i miss it. web 2.0 is too clean!

3. oh yeah, the merge with helios is 100% the best possible option. it was really the only one that made sense to me out of the other ones. NDA initially would seem like the anarchist's answer but giving the possibility of a world where there isn't some greater force controlling society isn't exactly too bad of an option either. should definitely revisit that game in the future, it's been quite some time.

4. aw, not too big of a fan of love rap? i understand, i understand.. (っ- ‸ - ς). and i completely forgot about samurai slice! that one's really good.

5. i was always a sleepycabin fan, i loved hearing the newgrounds animators i watched as a child ramble on for hours about their degenerate behaviors. the jeff on sleepycabin is one of my favorite cast members for being the only straightman among the incomprehensible and absurd garbage that comes out of their mouths. hearing hypotheticals about having mini clones of yourself and if they wanted to fuck you and stories about being sent to a sponge factory with mentally challenged children as punishment for acting up in class are simply unmatched. i've added the bombcast to my youtube playlist saves, they seem like a bunch i'd greatly enjoy.

aw well i appreciate it. your page is incredibly neat, and i didn't want my comment to stick out like a sore thumb. i saw that in your 'director's cut' blog that readability is a must, so i just thought i'd try to respect it and try to keep things clean aswell!

*sorry for the deleted comments, there were a couple things i wanted to add onto.

by kult; ; Report

  1. Glassworks is peak!!!!! Glass' stuff in general hits pretty hard ('specially his OSTs—Koyaanisqatsi and Mishima rank highly on my fave movies list, and it's in no small part thanks to his soundscapes), but that thing.... AUGH. distinct memory of hearing Floe not long after having gone through Koyaani for like the third time ever and thinking "holy shit it's just The Grid but better"

aside from Glass' compositions, i cannot recommend Steve Reich enough. his later works tilt more towards chamber music rather than minimalism—i.e. western classical played by an ensemble small enough to, quite literally, fit in a space similar to a palace chamber—but it strikes more-or-less the same note (heh). if you want a distilled rec, it's hard to beat MfaLE. if you don't mind sitting down and locking in for a good hour and spare change, however...

  2. amen to everything mentioned. i do think W2.0 has its moments here and there, but they've by and large been relegated to the "background" - self-hosted, negative-pageview sites maintained and kept alive through stubbornness and sheer love for the craft and the era in which it thrived.

  3. perfectly understandable. i'd have to replay in full to be 100% sure, but from what i can recall, it really felt like Helios was the ending that the game was dominantly building towards. (bolstered by the fact that Invisible War "agreed" with it, at least partially. amalgam of every ending and all that.)

  4. look man i think the JP version's great and all but i've lost count of how many times i had my Remix 10 perfect attempts thwarted because of the iffy-ass timing on that thing in EN soooooo. y'know. there's a TINY bit of negative bias here

  5. sleepy's passed through my YT recs before but i never gave 'em a proper check, and at face value (from your examples), they sound like a great fucking time. any specific snippets or even full 'casts you'd rec? (also, BC's sort of whatever nowadays considering the fact that pretty much everyone who made it what it is has left in the last few years. after 2019, the material becomes a lil' weak. bear that in mind.)
if there's anything you don't have to worry about, it's having your comment(s) stick out. the War Room has seen its fair share of lengthy-ass reply chains—it'll live through a few more. also, you have my thanks for actually taking the time to read that thing; i do NOT take it for granted!

※ i actually didn't get any ghost notifs which is Kinda Big? that was like my one annoyance w/ SH's notif system. pretty dope if that's been taken care of in the meantime.

by Ikoe; ; Report

1. i will definitely try more of glass' work! thank you for the recommendations. i greatly enjoy chamber music, i have to take a listen to steve reich's work. i'll start with MfaLE like you linked!

2. oh, sure, sure. i'd be lying if i said web 2.0's sleekness wasn't incredibly satisfying to me. there's a lot of incredible graphic design work i've seen on the internet that leaves me wondering how they even do it. (sidenote, check out luka sabbat's clothing site, it should look incredibly familiar to you. it's pretty creative, i haven't seen a site mimic this style before. https://markingdistance.com/)

5. i love hearing them talk about cringey videos or insane content online because i'm someone who loves spectating weird freaks or strange events online. please enjoy the aforementioned sponge story. chris, cory, niall, and zach are the perfect 'tism team. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0Db1ML82lg oneyplays is basically an extension to this dead podcast, the topics on there are hilarious too. here's chris and zach forcing their friend cory in an isekai anime where he turns into a dung beetle who collects the shit of the girl he wants to date. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey6-heDE-OI (i'm not gonna bother hyperlinking so i don't embarrass myself for the world to see because sometimes it works for me sometimes it doesnt..)

and no problem! i try my best to get a general knowledge about everyone by going through parts of their page before adding or accepting them.

*oh, good, good. i didn't want you to log in to the site to comments that would leave you wondering what was said! that stuff really matters to me. i don't wanna be too bothersome or step on anybody's toes!

by kult; ; Report

2. this is, for lack of a better term, a notably ballsy design. zero blue boards, too. goodness.
i cannot, for the life of me, find it again, but there was this one page acting as a collection of fonts that was so... concerningly precise? like, exact-pixel alignments combined with extraordinarily optimized CSS declarations and whatnot. felt like i was reading increasingly-elaborate witchcraft or something.

5. the factory fuckin burned down
god, i'm still cackling at that. the WEIGHT in that statement. incredible. the japanese take on Metamorphosis is alright, though i'm more obsessed with the rec i got on the side because holy shit, zach just leads right into it. zero to a hundred. what a guy.

i am, admittedly, running out of steam here—feel free to take the baton if you want! anything you feel like ranting about, positively or negatively, at this particular moment? any questions you wanna throw out apropos of nothing/for shits and giggles?

what's winter like where you're from? do the leaves fall? does it snow? erm.... does anything that might typically fall in the cold fall?

in these unprecedented times; unnaturally warm and not cold enough. the leaves do fall for the most part, though.

last time i saw proper snow was in early HS several years ago. the rest—all the stuff that came afterwards—is just... iunno, light, wack-ass coats of white by comparison.

How was your weekend?

tiring in a good way. night out with the lads was cozy, moreso considering we haven't seen each other in a hot minute.
still chipping away at The Wire with my bro; it's proven to be an equally fulfilling and thoroughly depressing experience. shame that thing never won a single Emmy.
also heading more frequently to Da Gym in an attempt to make some enby goals come alive (i.e. not being an obese fuck and mayhaps even looking a lil' cute) which has so far been relatively successful. here's to hoping the next few months are even better in that regard.

have you seen the Risk of Rain announcements 'n shit? how we feelin' about that?

also, tunes.

by Ikoe; ; Report

Glad hanging out went well.
I know nothing of the wire. Is it particularly well regarded?
I hope that going to the gym continues to go well for you.
I have not seen the risk of rain announcements. Should I go google them or would you like to give me your take on the news?

by Fawkes; ; Report

hey i'm late

The Wire never won an Emmy in its time but it never really needed one. anyone who took the time to properly watch and digest it called it what it is; a documentary posing as an incredibly well-laid-out drama, a startlingly grounded look at a neverending societal cycle... stuff of that sort. in the confines of HBO's output, it's high art.

it is going well.

with how absurdly delayed this reply is, i imagine you've already seen the announcements and whatnot already. my take: excited for more RoR2 content. not really crazy about RoR:R (the 2D approach puts me off). don't care about the gacha.

by Ikoe; ; Report

This profile is the only outlet through which I have heard of any of this news, contrary to your assumption. The idea that we're getting a 2d game and a gacha is the kind of think I would think is a parody if it came from a source I trusted less than I do you.
