How much of the dishonored series have you played through?

Report Comment

one playthrough of each game and the dlcs

curse of the outsider is very lame and forgettable

the second game is very fun and has some incredibly unique and enjoyable missions but didn't feel like much of an improvement to the first and i was not invested in the story like at all

and the first game is my second favourite arkane game (since prey 2017 exists) and it hits like that perfect balance of an engaging story with gameplay that never gets tiring due to how freeing it is and i'd replay missions jsut to see the different approaches i could take. the dlcs are fun too but not too memorable and steam glitched for me and didn't give any dlc achievements so i'm still salty

How have you been holding up for the last month or so?

life's been going, alright.

finished my second uni semester and honestly it turned out better than i thought cause of how much of a fucking mess it was, not pretty at all when you have an incompetent prof and everyone bands together to shit on her to the higher ups to no avail..

hung out with friends a bunch after that horrific experience. went to an anime con, a concert, biking and got a group going for black ops 2 zombies (big deal btw)!

also just came back from a week long trip to maui hawaii with the fam. got to hike on a volcano, swim with the turtles, and tried some exotic fruits but got burnt even after copious amounts of sunscreen was applied everyday..

and i'm working my way through some 2023 movies like so far i have watched zone of interest, perfect days, monster, and the killer. i highly recommend you to give the movie challengers a try as well while it's in cinemas. trust me, go in blind, it's worth the experience!

and what about you? please do tell how your past month has been too

My semester ended in a really stressful slog and then I had like two weeks of busy social events for the two weeks afterwards or so, and since then I have been a burnt out shell of a person just grinding Chiv 2.

The games section of your profile says trandformers... please tell me about the transformers games.

Report Comment

unironically some of the best transformers media you can find.. i've played almost every transformers game you can find on ps3 and ps4, along with emulating the ps2 game. most of them are movie tie-ins and really cheaply made which i would not recommend unless you're a kid or have absolutely nothing else to do, with the exception of the dark of the moon game. it's a prequel to the movie that has some really fun missions and actually a pretty solid multiplayer, which is shut down now.

high moon studios made the war of cybertron and fall of cybertron games which are why i even remember transformers as fondly as i do now. they both seem like generic third person shooters from the 2010s (which they are) but they also chronicle the entire war on cybertron from the beginning to the autobots abandoning the planet, fully realizing the story that every transformers fan wanted to see. lots of huge set pieces, character dynamics that you won't see in the shows/movies, has a living and breathing cybertron, lots of focus on providing depth to the characters' backstories, and gameplay that while is pretty repetitive never gets tiring as you play different characters every mission with their unique abilities and vehicle forms. also if i remember correctly you can beat all of war of cybertron in 3 player coop whereas fall of cybertron is fully singleplayer.

then there's also transformers devastation which is a much smaller g1 on earth experience but it's made by platinum games so if you like metal gear rising and/or bayonetta i highly recommend it for the variety in combos and boss fights.

unfortunately the 4 transformers games i mentioned are delisted on all platforms so unless you get physical discs or get them from key resellers (i just checked and they go for hundreds of dollars smh) you'll have to pirate them. which is such a shame as i put countless hours into the multiplayer modes for these games back in the day and as far as i know there are no custom servers or such...

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

Forgive me for asking this of you, but you should check this link out. The guy who does the half life Freeman's Mind videos has started a campaign to petition governments across the globe to not let game publishers just disable the multiplayer features of games. The instructions I sent you are tailored for sending complaints regarding a specific game called the crew, since that's a big title that's shutting down, but I honestly think you should look into submitting the dark of the moon game if you own a physical copy. I know I'm kinda just asking you to go do something out of the blue, but I think it's an important cause and diversifying the types of complaints will show regulators that this is a games industry problem, not a ubisoft problem.

It does sound neat to have a movie tie-in that builds and shows the wider universe, rather than just retreading the plot of one of the movies.

Agree that the death and de-listing of games sucks and that there should be more games that get custom server support in the current games ecosystem.

So it seems like your in with Transformers is the live action movies' games. Did you also watch / are you into the animated transformers stuff?

by Fawkes; ; Report

I'll look into it but i'm not too passionate about the topic. Ubisoft is scummy and locking games like the crew is very much something they'd do so i'd like to see something done too even if it doesn't affect me directly. as for the multiplayer in transformers games i don't think they're really applicable here. first, the mp in them had a very niche and cult following so even back when i played it you'd have difficulties getting into a match on most days. second, you can fully enjoy the games' singleplayer without any online features and the multiplayer was not the focus of the games being more like a bonus for those that were dedicated enough. third, they kept the servers active for several years even after the games were delisted, only shutting down in 2020 likely due to covid and being a net loss, as many other services were shutting down at the time i can't entirely put the blame on them. anyway since we're on the topic i also wanna see similar action taken against nintendo for how much they've been fighting back against emulation. rip yuzu and citra...

dark of the moon is the only live action movie tie in out of the games i mentioned but yeah i do fully agree, as they took a lot of liberty in making the game and weren't tied to michael bay shenanigans

i looked it up right now and it seems like fans got the servers running for these games back in 2022 although i'm not sure how successful that resurrection was and if there's still anyone playing. i do agree that custom servers should become the norm in the industry but also these games were first and foremost console games during the ps3 era and they weren't big enough like battlefield to have a server renting system. the pc ports for these games had some funky quirks like i remember playing fall of cybertron on a pirated version of windows 7 back in 2013 as the game was made to only run on that os for whatever reason.

yeah i watched my fair share of transformers media as a kid. to my memory i have seen g1 and its movie, robots in disguise 2001, the unicron trilogy (armada, cybertron, energon), animated, and prime. all of these defined my childhood and i had many of the toys too! if you were hoping to discuss the intricacies of any of these series i'm afraid i can't really provide much as i haven't watched these since i was a kid

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

I understand that there is a large difference in the signifigance of a multiplayer mode in a singleplayer game vs an always online multiplayer game, but I think as far as the law sees it, both are either okay or not okay for the fact that they've disabled content after purchase.

I would not be the guy to talk details about animated transformers. I've not even watched a full episode of the tv show in my life.

On a separate note, very based of you to have blade runner 2049 on your favorite movies, but not the original.

by Fawkes; ; Report

i like the original too but i watched 2049 first and it was one of the most memorable cinema experiences for me. it's one of my most rewatched movies as there's quite nothing like it, even denis villeneuve's dune movies can't reach the 2049 experience for me.

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

I feel very conflicted rating the two, because i consider 2049 to be the better film on its own, but the way they brought back deckard just strikes me as kinda silly, as it destroys the ambiguity that is created in the first film around wether deckard himself is human while skirting around the intrigue of the idea that Rachael might have an open life span.

So 2049 shits on the original movie a little bit in a way that makes both films a little worse?

Thus, part of me wants to reject 2049 for the disservice it does to the original, but another part of me really likes 2049. I usually just decide to mentally separate them and rate 2049 as my favorite, but it's a hard compromise for me to accept because it feels like I'm doing the original dirty.

Also while we're talking blade runner, I'll say I do highly recommend the book. Although the movie is based off the book, the plot of the two is very different and I honestly find the book more interesting conceptually and it doesn't tread on the toes of either movie unlike the way the movies tread over one-another.

by Fawkes; ; Report

that's very understandable, i can see where you're coming from and i do think deckard's inclusion in the movie falls flat. it's probably more of a marketing decision to include him rather than a creative one.

deckard being in 2049 doesn't make the two movies worse for me... while he does play a somewhat prominent role in 2049 he's not what comes to mind when i think of 2049. like you mentioned i tend to separate the two movies in my head and i do wish 2049 tried being less of a sequel and more of a spiritual successor but it is what it is.

i don't think you're doing the original dirty by preferring 2049. it's a vision of another director and so i think it's very fair to separate them. i don't think ridley scott was too involved with 2049 and i honestly kinda prefer that.

i've heard great things about the book and yes i do plan to get around to reading it but probably not any time soon. speaking of blade runner media, there's also the 1997 game which i've been eyeing for years now but the steam remaster had very negative reviews for being unoptimized to hell so i've been putting it off.

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

Assuming you're talking about the point and click adventure game, I'll say that GOG has it working well and they restored some cut content I think?

by Fawkes; ; Report

yeah i heard the gog version works well but i wanted to give the remaster a try after i heard it was getting one. didn't know about the cut content though. about all my knowledge of the game comes from the mandaloregaming video i watched like 5 years ago too

an incredible, if not concerning amount of overlap in taste. not without its questions, though, of which i could have a field day with here. what's your favorite TSC chapter and why is it (not) Spectrum? which skill did you vibe with most in DE and—again—why is it (not) Shivers? did you keep the fangirl chick alive in Katana? do you share the belief that Remix 8/DS was RH's pre-Megamix peak? did you keep your promise or did you end up getting Leave/Memory? so on and so forth.

Report Comment

for tsc i really like spectrum too, it felt completely standalone and the live action video at the end shook me plus it's the chapter with the 100 question quiz which was awesome but i'd say my favourite is kamuidrome for the psychotic couple on the kamui forums and the live action segments with the idol, it felt like the most unique chapter of the game. for de i like shivers as well and ran with the hobocop and cop of the apocalypse thoughts, the skills i had the most fun with are probably inland empire and drama as my harry was a bit of a madman and it made for some great scenarios, i'd also use my authority a lot and try to be a dick but one that's still lovable. for katana zero i honestly don't remember as it's been years since i played but yeah probably, i'll definitely replay it if the dlc ever comes out but also i wanna strongly recommend you a game called sanabi if you haven't played it already, it's still in early access but it should be able to scratch that katana zero itch for a bit. for rhythm heaven i only played fever on dolphin out of my general love for rhythm games and the artstyle but i haven't played any of the handheld games and i'd love to play megamix but as far as i know it was eshop only and i haven't modded my 3ds so i'm not sure when i'll get to play it. for signalis i only played it once and got the memory ending. it's like silent hill where the ending is determined by your playstyle so i guess you can tell how i play these games through that, i only killed 15 enemies in the entirety of sh3 and signalis swarms you with enemies like that game in its second half so i would mostly just run past all of them like it's og re. also i found you through your spacehey at night theme which i have been using since and it's been great so thank you a bunch for creating that as i mostly use my pc at night with no lights. feel free to ask more questions regarding my taste on here or on discord (yanmania) as i love talking about this stuff, i'm still a fairly new user on here so i'm not sure where the best place to communicate would be... bulletins? ims? profile comments?

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

i think Spectrum moved me more than any other chapter by seeming entirely non sequitur when contrasted with SC's enigmatic and conspiracy-heavy vibes, yet still tugging the hell out of my heartstrings. that Big Reveal™ as to what happened between Koichi and Hikaru, and everything that follows, is just... god, man. i feel like that really cemented the thought of "i'm reading a masterpiece" or something.

valid take. for me, it was a mix of either Shivers + Inland or Volition + Rhetoric——a more "controlled" Harry compared to how the story describes him, i guess. :V

chucked SANABI into my wishlist. at a glance, it seems like they're gonna exit EA any month now, so here's to hopin'. odds are i'll nab it on a sale regardless.

gasp! heresy! but really, i'd at least recommend emulating RHDS if that's within the realm of possibility. nailing Lockstep and locking (heh) into its beat after a couple of retries is great stuff.

also valid. my first run ended up being unnecessarily... "efficient" and inquisitive about every single interactable, so i ended up getting Leave. kind of a bummer, but then again, that's just the nature of the game. i should pick it up again one of these days; still due for a Survival run if only for achievement's sake.

happy to hear it's being used in its intended environment. ^^
regarding comms, it really just depends on what you vibe most with. on a personal level, i enjoy barging into comment sections with any brand of stupid shit——mainly because it allows for a sort of snail-mail approach, so neither side has to care much about factors like timezones or w/e——but i've met with folks who are/were more comfortable with IMs or discord. world's your oyster and all that jazz. do tell what works best for ya!

by Ikoe; ; Report

oh yeah i agree with your thoughts on spectrum and how it contrasts with the rest of the game, it felt like a nice change of pace after the exposition heavy first chapter but it's not the first thing i think of when tsc comes to mind so i can't really call it my favourite but it is due to chapters like spectrum that tsc is such a special game. now that i think of it 25th ward doesn't really have anything similar but also that game was made for flip phones and would release chapters over time like a telltale or life is strange game so all the chapters had to progress the main plot forward (talking about correctness only). actually what are YOUR thoughts on 25th ward, i don't see people talking about it as much as tsc... which i don't really blame them as i think overall tsc is a better experience but 25th ward has some great moments that are beyond absurd which i have never witnessed in any other media, except for maybe suda's manga kuroyami dance.

in my disco playthrough i never took any substances (which kim complimented me for) yet i made sure to grab every speed bottle lol. i think my volition was pretty high level but rhetoric not so as my harry would kinda mumble his way through most political situations and had a difficult time convincing people that he actually means business. i just wanna gush about this game for a bit as it is as perfect as a game like this can get for me. i don't have an extensive history with ttrpgs apart from some dnd campaigns that ended early, disco is basically a one on one with the dm and has made me fall in love with the genre, i joined a vtm campaign right after finishing disco this summer which has been great except for the fact that the dm has cancelled sessions for two weeks straight and i just wanna get back in it already as it's honestly proven to be way more enjoyable than dnd from my experience. disco elysium is just such a special game to me now and i'm listening to songs from the album basically every day (la revacholiere and ecstatic vibrations, totally transcendent).

sanabi is great!! it should be out of ea soon like you said but also they've been delaying it for a while now which isn't really a complaint but i first played the game a year ago and i'm just patiently awaiting to see what they've been cooking up as they very infrequently update us with their progress but i'm sure it'll be worth the wait as from what we've seen it seems like they have enough content to almost double the length of the game.

i will definitely give rhythm heaven ds a try which isn't out of the realm of possibility as i usually emulate ds games on a tablet, i just haven't done so in some years so i'll make sure to get around to it sooner rather than later

it's a cool system and adds a lot of replayability but also the first runs are usually the worst in terms of which ending you get unless you miraculously play in the specific way the game intended for a true ending. first time i played sh2 i got the in water ending and was kinda disappointed, guess the game thought i was suicidal in my play style. also i've never done any high difficulty/challenge runs of survival horror games as i already enjoy the standard challenge provided so it seems like it'll be more of annoyance to go through rather than an actual challenge. i recently tried playing killer8 and that was HELL you have to be perfect in everything you do and it even seemed like there were less operational harman rooms so i got kinda impatient and decided to drop it for now.

yeah talking like this really does feel like mailing each other, trying to fit all of your thoughts into one big message and all so i'm totally down to keep talking like this, i am way more active on discord than spacehey but this is a way cooler and unique way to interact

by YAN!!!!!!!!; ; Report

having experienced Blackout in its entirety, my immediate thoughts re: 25W are negative. bad. horrible. inevitably, though, that cools off and you get my actual thoughts on the matter, which are as follows: it's alright. stylistically, it's arguably Suda's snazziest and most consistent post-killer7 release, but i didn't really enjoy the pacing + storyline between Correctness and Placebo. Matchmaker was great from start to finish, though. Osato my beloved. anyway, i owe it a reread one of these decades, i think. it's not entirely unlikely that i failed to give its subject matter enough brainpower - compared to how much i hyperfixated on and adored TSC, at least.

braver man than i. non-zero amount of times where i briefly sidelined the notion of not being a substance abuser in favor of easily passing a check or two. in regards to it being a personally special game; felt. i'd gone through it at a time when i was dealing with some irl issues and also pondering on whether or not i'd lost a certain love for RPGs after not having played any notably high-quality ones, so to have both of those sides relieved for lack of a better term just by playing through the whole thing organically is... something, to say the least. (big fan of live with me and hope in work & joy in leisure by virtue of how much those two and their respective in-game sections broke me.)

[insert obligatory yet unnecessary "a delayed game is eventually good" rant here]

have fun when you do get 'round to it! fingers crossed in hopes that you can get over the hoop of superbing some of the trickier early-stage minigames as well; Shoot 'Em Up is a groove and a half, but lord does that thing chip away at you for a while.

while i generally agree with this, i think you could make the argument of "SIGNALIS isn't awfully difficult when you get into its rhythm compared to other survival horrors" without breaking much of a sweat. only segments i'd be most worried about are the Mynahs and that weird-ass cage monster thing close to Isa, but as you mentioned in your initial reply, you can reliably run past everything else for the most part. killer8 does kinda suck ass tho, with or without young Harman. not as good as hopper7. :p

that's what i'm sayin! it's a great breath of fresh air compared to snappier, IM-oriented messaging, for sure.

a few more off-the-dome Qs to keep it goin': any plans on reading Higurashi if you've already gone through Umineko? would you agree in thinking that Mirror's Edge is just about the closest that any game dev has gotten to personifying the late aughts by way of vidya? in four sentences or less, how would you sell Umurangi to someone who's seen it in passing via Steam's discovery queue thing, but didn't put much thought into it aside from "oh, this looks kinda neat"? has Takeshi Kitano's filmography reached your eyeballs and/or your ears at any given point? (if not, consider the following!)

by Ikoe; ; Report

oh i actually never did all the endings in blackout but i gotta go back as i have the platinum in tsc and have been thinking of getting the 25w one as well. honestly fair, i agree that placebo was way weaker compared to tsc and how it ties into the main plot but i did really enjoy correctness on its own, especially the first 4 cases were so damn entertaining. this might sound blasphemous but 25w has my favourite artstyle of any suda game, i just really enjoy that empty urban aesthetic, it kinda feels like i'm playing an album rather than a game. matchmaker was great yeah if mostly for the tsuki and osato conversations.

honestly my story with disco elysium is very similar but it took me a while to get into it as first time around i played it for like 5 hours straight but then completely forgot about it (?) and then two years later because of a friend that had recently beaten it beating me up for never finishing it, i got back into it and could not stop. before playing disco i had barely played any games this year and had mostly lost faith in the industry after being severely disappointed by atomic heart hogwarts legacy and re8 so i basically stopped playing games for several months until disco. those last 5 or so hours of the game from the shooting to the credits were possibly the most emotional moments i had playing a game apart from the endings of umineko and tgaa. i can't believe i kept putting off the game for so long and it has completely reinvigorated my love for the medium. especially now with games like armored core 6 and bomb rush cyberfunk coming out maybe this year hasn't been so bad for games afterall.

have you played any other new indie survival horror games like tormented souls and alisa? i tried alisa a while back and couldn't put more than an hour into it although i should definitely return to it sometime. hopper7 is truly something special but honestly as much as i love killer7 you'd have to add achievements to the game to even make me consider playing killer8 again.

i actually read the first episode of higurashi the same week i finished umineko. i have mixed opinions on it, mostly due to the pace. i think the latter half was genuinely terrifying and i was very engaged in the mystery but then i started episode 2 and dropped it 10 minutes in, saying to myself that i'm taking a break and will come back later as i was not about to read 5 more hours of kids playing games only as setup for the horror. i do still have the game installed so i'll return to it eventually but man am i gonna have to keep convincing myself that it's worth the commitment. with umineko it never really dragged for me except for some parts in episode 6 and it also take its time with setting everything up but it always felt like it valued your time unlike the games in higurashi.

oh yeah definitely, mirror's edge is 2000s the game, i actually just replayed it a couple months ago and i was reminded why i even fell in love with it in the first place. i first played it when i was around 10 and it just felt very unique while also nostalgic as if i grew up in the glass city. it just brings back good memories of when i would climb garages and buildings with friends in the dirty and disgusting suburbs of russia when i was around 5 years old, yup there's not much else to do there as a child believe me. i think it's also the artstyle of the cutscenes that contributes to the late aughts feeling you're referring to, many shows around the time had those simple character designs with rough movements, looking like they're made out of paper that you don't really see anymore. reminded me of kim possible, my life as a teenage robot and foster's home for imaginary friends. strange comparison but you get the idea (similar fashion too).

"umurangi generation is a modern game that transports you into a dreamcast inspired dystopian world. you are given a camera and told to explore, the story of the setting being told only if you are willing to find out for yourself. even without any knowledge of photography the game won't bombard you with constant photo lingo and will leave you to find out for yourself how you want to take photos of this chill yet disturbing landscape with a soundtrack that will make you wish there were more games with a similar vibe" and yes i found out about this game through thorhighheels, who is a youtuber that i respect very much and i absolutely love the vibe of his music, i refer to it as 25thwardcore.

actually i found out about takeshi kitano when i played yakuza 6 and his performance in that game breathed so much life into that game, but don't get me wrong i'm probably the biggest y6 apologist out there. and yes i have seen one movie of his titled achilles and the tortoise which i thoroughly enjoyed but mostly for how entertaining its second half was and it was probably no the best starter for his movies as i realize it's meant to be a biographic parody of his life. i do have dolls in my watchlist as well and i'll be adding sonatine now too but i do plan to go through all his movies over time so thanks for the suggestion!
