also re: art thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu so much genuinely :3333 drawing is pure fun for me 90% of the time.
even when i cared more about technical skill and did proper studies on the reg it was still mostly fun because i just love drawing, i love the process. aiming for realism is like a puzzle: figuring out which marks will produce which texture, figuring out the best use of hue and value to emulate light, ect. ect... observational drawing in particular is super fun for me. i just get really lost and immersed in the subject and my attempt at capturing it, i have a whole sketchpad full of figures referenced from life i drew back when my college hosted free figure drawing sessions. i might go thru my things and upload them for posterity if i remember anytime soon. i mean, i still do figures but from images haha. not as often though since its just not as satisfying/fun for me

i looooooove coloring its my favorite part of the process :3 i love trad (but also digital) painting for that reason cuz its really just hue/value, i dont need to worry about starting with clear defined contours like i would in an illustration

but either way caring less about technical prowess stuff makes drawing all the more fun (funner???)! :DDD idk ive been doing this long enough that i have cobbled together a sort of ethos abt art and intuition is crucial, i think. and i believe it is indicative of a different kind of intelligence, as opposed to the variety that is used to apply technical knowledge, if that makes sense????! the first is engaging in cognizant replication of a technique, image, or real life subject, and the is second involves tapping into your own unfiltered perception of what is beautiful (or not)/how you as an individual see things and what you are aesthetically/emotionally inclined to do... like analytical intelligence vs emotional/creative intelligence/capacity for introspection. both are important components with neither being superior to the other, but the former can be very, very tiring mentally xD so i mostly follow my intuition right now, since i just draw for my own relaxation and satisfaction

i feel like in the contemporary world the way a lot of people make and engage with art ends up being contrary to using your intuition and having fun :v im not a fan of the impact mainstream social (twitter and instagram mainly) media sites have had on the art space. by nature of how they work, it conditions the audience to see drawings as consumer objects you glance at momentarily n then dispose of after, and a lot of artists seem to internalize that and see the amount of engagement a piece gets as a reflection of its worth. it makes it hard to hold onto the feelings that made drawing worthwhile in the first place, and, personally, ive seen lots of art styles crop up that are primarily informed not by the artist's own perspectives, choices, sincere inspirations, and intuition, but what they think may help them cultivate a following on Instagram... ? i would rather see hobbyists draw without the pretense of, well, marketing, i guess

lolol im just going on a major tangent now but typing this up kind of reminded of a book i read a while ago, CS Lewis's The Great Divorce. obv hes coming from an explicitly christian moral/philosophical viewpoint (i am not that) but regardless he presents a lot of interesting, albeit exaggerated, mini character studies exploring human faults nd how people can lose sight of good things in favor of *approximations* of good things, which ultimately serve to keep them away from what is truly good. anyway there's an artist character in there that he explores to make a point about people losing sight of why they began making art in the first place due to extrinsic desires. wont go into further detail about the book or what it says haha but yeah i found that chapter in particular very interesting and relevant to me personally

basically i try to keep that stuff in mind to ensure that i dont give up on art or lose what makes it enjoyable LOL

its sincerely so fantastic that it was such a sucsess to show what has to be one of my alltime faveorites. ill have to really scrape the memory bank to remember some of the most interesting indi and avantagrd stuff ive been able to see so far and there is a bunch of cult classics that can be controversial and worth watching for that controversy

like gosh i really liked how lukewarm ferris buellers days off was to the crowd because it really felt like it said something about how unreliable an experience that is that its not even fun wish fulfillment to a crowd of strange internet people thinking about everyone else OTHER then the main character- agh especially that one kid who had the abusive dad

yeah brazil lives in my brain every time i have to file taxes or go to the dmv as i think about how my dad struggles to file his medical documents because one person misspelled his name once and now its a permanent blemish that cant ever be fully removed and just has made his life harder ever since

brazil is his faveorite movie of all time hahahahaha

I felt about Breakfast Club similarly to how you feel about Bueller's. It's a movie that I just can't find anyone in the room to relate to. With Bueller's, I have come to like it more and more as time has gone on as a perspective on how malleable our roles in society can be. I was a straight edge in highschool and living a day like a real life Bueller was unthinkable to me. I don't mean stealing cars and impersonating businessmen, just the banality of skipping school and gaming interactions with any officials you don't like. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a movie that points out to me that I can just change up my routines and ways of conceptualizing things like authority, and I like it for that.

its always nice when people enjoy what i splattered up here because 2 years ago when i joined it really took alot out of me to just biuld something for myself and not expressly others so it became like a diary and a way to remind and encourage the person i want to be.

slowly but surely i am learning more about the back end of the tec i use and its important to do silly self indulgent projects like this so i can get that practice in hahaha

yeah its been one of the first major instances of the post modern-ification of garfeild and cementing him as this internet symbol.

i was one of those kids that accidentally got my hands on that cursed official book where it goes through multiple style changes to show his 9 lives and one of them has him kill his owner of a kind old lady

i had a bunch of the anthology books as a kid prior, not because i liked them just because people would give them to me. so it felt like this omnipresent force and i find it funny how often that experience was mirrored thanks to how commercial garfeild was over all other bland mascot characters that fought for his spot at the time

now a days we have a level of customization, user choice and speed that makes it harder for some bland boring shit people feel stuck with to just haunt an entire generation like that haha

either that or im just so far in the deep end of alt culture after fighting back so hard from a youth of neglect and apathy towards the things i ACTUALLY liked that i dont know what mainstream conformity looks like anymore

• Hello Vex! I hope that you don't mind that my last question was neither long nor particularly insightful. I like to use quick and dirty conversation starters like that because I've found that a good and thoughtful response can come from them and from there I often find myself learning neat things about people that you never really get unless you ask someone about the silly stuff. That and the follow up questions people ask are equally often great and engaging interrogations. Perhaps it's not a concern, considering you've got "Get weird with it" signposted, but it's always worth checking methinks.


• I'm thinking about starting a fast and loose little spacehey collective, kinda like a webring?, for sharing the neat things on spacehey that aren't just cool profiles. Stuff like the movie club, the project you consulted me about, Ikoe's At Night™, a special sumn I'm in the planning stages of, etc. I'm going around and consulting the would-be early invites to this collective and asking for thoughts on 1st, a name for the group and 2nd, ideas on how to organize it. In terms of organization, I'm currently thinking that the requirement to have your project included would be to link to the other pages directly somewhere mildly visible on your project, but that might get messy if we grow past even a half dozen or so projects, so maybe it would be best to have a central hub and just require linking to that? Maybe just name dropping the collective and not linking at all to be kinda mysterious and gatekeepy would be fun? Idk, which is why I'm asking.

OH so i could go with something easy and say ramen or eggs, but i feel like tofu is one of those weird shelf safe foods that is so amazing to buy in bulk that its worth mentioning to something here like gosh, totally is a staple food for me and like ANYTHING bean related lasts forever but it was totally unexpected to see that tofu lasts like over a year and its so versatile with how you can make it, and unlike most dry beans you gotta like soak it or some shit to get it to finally be cooking ready, but with tofu if you get those weird little box containers that can go from shelf to pan right away and throw in some miso soup packets and thats like my go to struggle food that i buy in bulk so each meal is less then a buck hahahah -anyways never think your words are frivolous my dear friend, i will respond to the rest of this later after im out of my silly anime convention, i also love the font change. very nice touch eheheheh-

well hey ive stuck my toes into irl versions of this and with the expansiveness of the internet there are many ways of going about that and translating everything people try to get out of something like that. i have to say this seems rather promising and for the most part im on board with my same brand of quiet patient caution i do with everything online hehehah


so id like to see the crowd your accruing first before really diving in and putting my all in.


is why ive had such a simple idea with my "tv channel homage" idea because i have a tenancy of over complicating things and if i keep it extremely simple at its core and then biuld up from there, i can just chose to give up and scrap the whole idea and still leave the basic core thing behind because it was so simple it remains.

so if anything if i like what the group has to offer i can either just share it as a extension of the group as a whole and not treat myself as "head of operations" but then if i feel like its out of my hands in a way i dont like i can just run off and do my own thing anyways hahaha

it would be good practice to see if i even want to dedicate the effort to such a thing, my big plan with the channel is to see if i can gather up people who feel too scared getting too big too fast (or getting big at all) and just want to make videos/music/etc and have that posted on the "tv channel" but specifically in the style of syndicated tv.

as for the double texting thing- ah way to make me think to add that to my page somewhere as something i will never think is a problem ahhaha

so with the webring thing- we talking about a redirect button on a page or is this more a group in the forums?

honestly if i was going to do a webring hosting projects ive been working on that will just tempt me to finally get around to cementing my neocities website that i have been endlessly sandbox tinkering with and never actually doing anything substantial with yet haha, so that sounds good

just giving you an extra hand with whatever your cooking up seems good to me though so whenever you follow through with whatever it is you chose to make this into ill be here for it!

• I say "like a webring" in that you would be able to move from project to project fairly easily, but unlike a normal webring, this org will be totally project focused. So instead of there being member people, the linking will be between member projects. This is very much going to be some sort of redirect on the page, as I honestly can't stand the spacehey forums or groups and I want this to be an informal thing.



• In terms of early member projects for the collective, spacehey movie club and Ikoe's At Night™ are the only two existing projects I know I would want to join, so those are really the only two you can vibe check association with.



• Part of the reason I want to build this is that I like spacehey and want to build and encourage others to build projects which feel like they add to the spacehey experience, instead of guiding people away from spacehey. Those projects currently mostly don't exist, so your TV broadcast would be one of the early examples of the kinds of things that I would want to promote.



• More discussion on the direction of the group seems to be happening on ikoe's page, linked here.

id be more onbord if it WAS through the forums honestly, they are only bad because nobody uses them and when they do its to stur drama

i like treating my web presence like a small slow turtle going at my own pace, never really pushing too hard to demand attention from anyone and if people dont like what i have to offer thats fine, i just keep moving and hope i showcase what something someone would hate me fore right up front in a way that makes those people want to ignore me not prod at me-because honestly on the internet thats end game failure state that is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OUT OF ONCE YOUR A TARGET

so yeah

not really eager to get many eyes on me too fast ehhehe

also i think that person denied my friend request so thats already making me think this in its current state dosn't have alot going for it

honestly the direction id go is "artist collective, webring on neocities" or "and updated single page that redirect links to internet events like a community calendar"


like think how collages will post up club events or the way the news will talk about local festivals

thats the vibe id go for

and then its "lets all play jackbox" or one of those digital white board like things

ive been looking for a free open source one that lets you just put it up on a website passively and so i can put that in the bottom of my bulletins

thats where my mind has been lately. not gunna bite off more then i can chew


consider using the forums though honestly, there is alot of good that comes out of it and theres more then one way to gatekeep if that is something your concerned with, and if you want a group to last any reasonable amount of time its best to be upfront with what your core values are for gatekeeping and all that

otherwise you get a bunch of people who have nothing in common realize who they are hanging around and freak out heahhah

all that "youve shown your true colors" thing because the internet's minimalism can intentionally or even outright unintentionally hide things, like its so easy to just forget we are text on screen without bodies so nobody can passively see things we live every day with

its what makes the internet so free but its something you really gotta take into account with how to work around with a website like this


like, thats why most internet groups stick to one topic or intrest and stays on topic as a core value so you dont have interpersonal arguments or anyone dropping info that might start one

but this website will have people flat out showing pictures of themselves so theres mixed anonymity so that makes it tricky to make sure everyone is on the same page and feeling safe

im just thinking about stuff, it takes time for me to biuld trust with people but like i said ill stay tuned and try to make it to the movie night because that sounds fantastic hahah

ill think more about what online things i want to biuld and contribute for sure regardless if it ends up in this group but i consider it a bonus if it dose work out that way

I don't think the forums are the move for practical reasons tbh. In terms of UX design, you just disadvantage yourself so much by not using a profile on spacehey. For one, the forums are super high friction in terms of the ratio of navigation to content, so you're just gonna get less interaction by using forums. Worse, no one uses forums very much in the first place, so the amount of discovery for the project would be near zilch without outside promotion. I know that's somewhat of a catch 22, but it's not a catch 22 worth solving because they're bad in terms of functionality imo.

I get that slowness has it's own merits, but aside from the clickbaiting engagement that happens in blogs, spacehey is already a super slow website and I feel that in terms of making a space to promote things, fighting for activity and attention is gonna be an uphill battle in the first place, so intentionally slowing things down further doesn't achieve much.

Also, I don't think you should fret too much about someone else who you don't know being involved. I think the final product for the group will mostly be a hub to promote spacehey centered projects, not a social space for it's own members.

Considering that my goal with this is to promote people doing cool things on spacehey, the idea of using neocities seems counter-productive to me. It kinda beats the idea that spacehey can be a place to build things if you have to build your spacehey centered group somewhere else. And on community calendar, I think again that the difference between what you and I are thinking is that I want ot just put up a billboard that you can use to find cool stuff on spacehey, not really creating a community. The collective part would be having all these venues cross promote the central space to build membership, but the goal isn't to really use the billboard itself as a social space.

On "let's all play jackbox," that's another thing that I just want to avoid because my point is to get people to build things to do on spacehey.com. Promoting a cool page that someone made that somehow looks like a game would be cool, but I don't want this to just be a venue to find things to do with other spacehey users.

I don't think the nothing in common angle is really important either. Again, the purpose of the collective wasn't to hang out with the other members as much as it was to just make spacehey a more interesting place in general by bulding things.

On having one topic or interest, that would just be "building stuff on spacehey."

I know I've disagreed rather vehemently with you here, but understand that I just think I hadn't really communicated what I was trying to craft very well. Let me know what you think and if you still see a lot of the same shortcomings with my plans.

I posit that perhaps he just has a favorite spot in hte yard that he just can't reach from where his leash is anchored. Perhaps if it was placed in the center of the yard he would be able to reach his favorite spot and calm down a bit.

so ill wait it out if anything happens on your end, see what you gather others to help you do and see if it is something that i want to be apart of

because for the most part, i really just dont like having many eyes on me so something that would rapidly shoot me into more of a spotlight then i have an understanding of having just sounds like a failure not a goal.

i come here for the obscurity, its not something i ever like fighting against because i appreciate all the friction here and any attempts to solve what is to me a FEATURE not a bug is just a slippery slope to creating the conditions im trying to actively avoid

OOH! I HAVE A GUITAR HERO CONTROLLER!!! buddy of mine gave it to me for my birthday, i have played a bit of clone hero and that has a ton of those songs baked into it but it really is a whole experience to have everything on the same console and what have you so absolutely will check it out, i never know what everyone's favorites are and so if i see things at flea markets and such i like knowing what to grab hahaha

yeah the zoom function is your best friend then to re align the side pictures that i made sure set both on the right and the left and then the top part is the only ones that have things in the middle

then on my track pad you can zoom separately without changing the alignment of the page

thats why i have so many tiny images, they are little easter eggs for that specific kind of zoom in or when you click "view image on new tab"

i have a wide laptop so i know that can get funky with other people's pcs
