I like this quote because it has so many meanings open to interpretation! Here are some of my ideas:
It could be that the pain it refers to is the pain of guilt when you accidentally hit someone with the ball, when all you meant to do was just throw it to them for them to catch it. You didn't know that they didn't want to catch it at all. And then after you hit them, you start thinking I should've asked if they were ready or willing to catch it or not, I should've given them a heads up.
Or it could be referring to the frustrated pain of putting in the effort to throw the ball to them, and then they don't reciprocate all the effort you put in, don't even bother to merely catch the ball, accept and appreciate your efforts, after you put in all that work to throw it to them. It's like your energy and struggle went to waste.
Maybe it's saying that the pain is embarrassment, the kind of embarrassment akin to when you wave or call out to an old friend in a crowded hallway and they don't even look at you, they walk past, and you're left with your hand still in the air, ignored. At first, you think they didn't see you, so then you try again, and you realise that you've been looked passed on purpose. Suddenly, you're hyper-aware of every other pair of eyes in that hallway, and you can't help but take a quick glance around to make sure nobody caught that wave to the air, but scouring the area only worsens the feeling.You scurry away after the humiliating event, tucking your head low, not knowing that virtually nobody stared or cared, and if they did, they probably don't even remember your face.
It may be the defiant sort of concealed pain, where you throw the ball, expect them to catch it, and when they don't, you feel ashamed of yourself for hitting them, but you bury it deep inside with false feelings of resentment for them. You think they should've caught the ball, so why the hell didn't they? You do this because you don't want to admit you're in the wrong, so you defy the guilt at first, you deflect the blame onto them because deep inside you know you messed up, you know you made a mistake. You just don't want to own up because you know you're a nice person, and a nice person would never make a mistake like that. But eventually you have to understand that you did do wrong, and even nice people can make a mistake.
The pain could even be a combination of all of the above: anger, frustration, guilt, sadness, disappointment, shame, embarrassment; it can be everything at once. That's what makes this quote so special.
