Hey!

It's about detecting deception through mediated communication, like social media. lol

Like if a person is fake? Or a real person is lying? Or spreading deceptive information on social media? I am fascinated! Tell me more :)

It is based on a theory by Mark McClish. He used it on criminals to analyze their testimony or confessions. The professor that I working under has done a lot of research already with real subjects, so I am waiting on access to the raw data. It's more statement analysis than anything, like to prevent catfishing and identity theft.

So i read his website, i gather he’s analyzed the dictionary based on how vague and specific words are, and how much situational knowledge matches the use of those words. So you can evaluate a statement based on how much a person should know about an event/story etc compared to how specific/vague they are. This allows for interpretation of congruency or divergence: “Your story doesn’t add up” type thing, and show parts of the statement to press on for more details.
Close? Whats the general idea for social media?

Sorry i see you mentioned catfishing and identify theft... input someone's profile and conversations and see if things match up... fun fun!

It is basically the same principal! Using the statement analysis portion of the theory to see if we can prove the same principals with a mediated communication. I came into the research after the initial research so I am catching up. But most of my paper will consist of testing that hypothesis.

His book “Don’t be Deceived” is pretty good and explains the basis of the method.
