Scenes from the Suburbs (2011)

dir. Spike Jonze • Short Film / Drama

Scenes from the Suburbs is a 2011 American short film directed by Spike Jonze and co-written by Jonze, Win Butler, and Will Butler of Arcade Fire. Conceived as a cinematic companion to the band’s 2010 album The Suburbs, the 28-minute film expands upon the record’s themes of nostalgia, alienation, and the fragile innocence of adolescence in a suburban dystopia. The story follows Kyle and his best friend Winter, two teenagers growing up in a militarized neighborhood torn apart by fear, occupation, and fading memories of friendship. Shot in Austin, Texas, the film uses hazy, sun-bleached cinematography and the music of Arcade Fire to evoke a haunting sense of youth lost in time and the quiet unraveling of suburban life.

The film stars Sam Dillon as Kyle, Paul Pluymen as Winter, and Zoe Graham as Zoe, with supporting roles by Ashlin Williamson as Paulo, Zeke Jarmon as Zeke, and Justin Arnold as Terrance. The members of Arcade Fire make cameo appearances throughout the film: Win Butler appears as Crossvine Cop 1 and Soldier 2, Régine Chassagne as a suburban mother, Will Butler as Crossvine Cop and Soldier 1, Richard Reed Parry as Kyle’s boss, Sarah Neufeld as Crossvine Cop 2, and drummer Jeremy Gara as a party dancer. The film also features Sienna Blaw, Shannon Honeybloom, and artist Marcel Dzama. Blending intimate performances with the band’s atmospheric score, Scenes from the Suburbs stands as a poignant and dreamlike meditation on memory, youth, and the quiet collapse of suburban innocence.

Win Butler

Born Edwin Farnham Butler III, he was raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, in a musically inclined family; his grandfather was the famed big-band leader Alvino Rey. Butler's path was set when he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, a boarding school in New Hampshire, where he met future band co-founder Josh Deu. It was a period of creative incubation, where he channeled the alienation of being a teenager far from home into playing guitar and writing his first songs. In 2001, he moved to Montreal to study at McGill University and co-founded Arcade Fire. There, he met Régine Chassagne, a music student who would become his creative and life partner. They married in 2003 and have a son, Eddie, forming the foundational pillar of the band's identity.

Instruments: Guitar, piano, keyboards, vocals, bass guitar, mandolin

Other projects: DJ Windows 98

Notable Moments & Anecdotes • The Band's Name: Butler often recounts a story he was told as a kid about a local arcade burning down. He admits it was "probably something that the kid made up," but the name, born from a piece of childhood lore, stuck.

• Saturday Night Live Guitar Smash: During a 2007 performance on SNL, a guitar string broke mid-song. In a moment of raw intensity, Butler ripped the remaining strings from his acoustic guitar and smashed it on the stage floor. The guitar bore the Haitian proverb "sak vide pa kanpe" ("An empty sack cannot stand up") in duct tape, a nod to Chassagne's heritage.

• Early On-Stage Drama: In one of the band's formative shows, Butler got into an on-stage argument with original drummer Brendan Reed, convinced he was messing up the beat. Butler began slamming his foot down, yelling "No, no, no" to mark what he believed was the correct tempo. The dispute was so intense that Reed quit the band on the spot, mid-song.

• The Broken String Walk-Off: At an early show, just eight bars into the opening song "Wake Up," bassist Tim Kingsbury broke a string, bringing the performance to a halt. Butler immediately stepped to the mic, announced, "Thank you, good night," and led the entire band off stage. Moments later, they returned, with Richard Reed Parry cheekily re-introducing them: "Up next, the Arcade Fire!"

• "Sprawl II" Auditorium Run: A signature move during select live performances of "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" involves Butler sprinting around the entire auditorium, sometimes visiting the concession stands, before returning to the stage.

Régine Chassagne

Régine Chassagne was born in Montreal to Haitian parents who had fled the oppressive Duvalier dictatorship, a history of exile and resilience that would profoundly shape her artistic identity. From an early age, Régine displayed an extraordinary musical aptitude, learning instruments and complex arrangements entirely by ear. She became a prodigy in her own right, exploring piano, percussion, and voice with an intuitive understanding that often astonished her teachers. Her home was filled with the sounds of Haitian rhythms, jazz, and classical music, cultivating in her a deep sense of musical versatility and a love for blending genres.

Régine pursued formal music studies at McGill University in Montreal, where her technical training intersected with her natural improvisational gifts. It was there that she met Win Butler, whose musical ambitions initially struck her as somewhat typical, she humorously recalled thinking, “everyone plays a little bit of piano and a little bit of guitar.” Yet, she quickly recognized in him a genuine artistic vision, and the two developed a profound creative partnership alongside their romantic relationship, eventually marrying in 2003.

Throughout her career with Arcade Fire, Régine has been known for her eclectic instrumentation, expressive vocals, and the emotional depth she brings to the band’s work. Her personal life has often intertwined with her art: for instance, her pregnancy with their son, Eddie, during the recording of Reflektor infused the album with themes of intimacy, transformation, and vulnerability. Her Haitian heritage, classical training, and natural prodigious talent combine to make Régine Chassagne one of the most distinctive and influential voices in contemporary music, celebrated for her ability to channel history, emotion, and virtuosity into every performance.

Instruments: Accordion, piano, keyboards, hurdy-gurdy, recorder, drums, percussion, xylophone, synthesizer, violin.

Notable Moments & Anecdotes
• The Exploding Drum Machine: While pregnant and experimenting with a drum machine for Reflektor, the machine suddenly exploded in her face. Thankfully unharmed, the band captured the chaotic sound of the amplifier blowing, which can be heard on the track "Flashbulb Eyes."

The distorted sounds that open ‘Flashbulb Eyes’ are the result of a happy accident. Jeremy [Gara] had a Roland SPDSX sampling drum pad and Régine was playing it one day into a tube amplifier, and she hit 10 pads together and it made this huge sound. It was so loud that some of the amplifier tubes blew, and there was smoke and the smell of burning. Korey happened to be recording and it made this fantastic, crazy sound. It really was the sound of an amplifier exploding! ’Flashbulb Eyes’ was recorded with similar signal chains to ‘Reflektor’.

• "Haiti" Vocal Recording: The vocals for the deeply personal song "Haiti" were recorded in a dark bathroom with a dictaphone. Chassagne wanted a private, intimate space to capture the emotion of the song, and the click of the "stop" button is still audible on the final track around the 50 second mark.

• Signature Stage Spectacles: Chassagne is renowned for her theatrical stagecraft. Her iconic performances include twirling ribbons during "Sprawl II," wearing mirrored accessories to reflect light during the Reflektor tour, and, on later tours, shooting laser beams from her hands and hips.

• Duct Tape Incident: During a 2005 performance, touring musician Owen Pallett playfully duct-taped her and Win together. The prank took a turn when Chassagne collapsed and was dragged across the stage by Butler, these moment of spontaneous chaos defined their early art-riot shows.

Will Butler

Multi-instrumentalist, vocals

Will Butler was born on October 6, 1982, in Truckee, California, and raised in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb north of Houston. The younger brother of Arcade Fire’s frontman, Win Butler, Will grew up in a household that valued creativity and introspection, his mother, Liza Rey, was a classical musician and harpist whose mother was a member of the King Sisters, while his father, Edwin Butler III, was a geologist with a deep appreciation for literature and culture.

Will immersed himself in books, languages, and sound from an early age. He learned piano and guitar by ear and became fascinated with the relationship between music and storytelling. After finishing high school, he attended Northwestern University, where he studied poetry and Slavic studies, reflecting his wide-ranging intellectual interests. There, he was active in the college radio scene and experimental art projects, and he developed the kinetic, uninhibited performance energy that would later define his stage presence.

Will joined Arcade Fire in 2003, shortly after the band was founded by his brother and Régine Chassagne. Though he often played bass, guitar, synthesizer, and percussion, he quickly became known for his electrifying live performances, leaping across the stage, drumming furiously, and throwing himself into the music with joyful abandon. His unpredictable, almost chaotic energy contrasted with his thoughtful academic background, giving Arcade Fire’s shows a sense of wild, unrestrained release.

Outside of the band, Will’s creative ambitions extended far beyond rock music. In 2013, he and Owen Pallett co-composed the score for Spike Jonze’s film Her, which earned them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. The soundtrack’s delicate, emotional tone showcased Will’s sensitivity as a composer, blending minimalist piano themes with quiet bursts of electronic color.

In 2015, Will released his first solo album, Policy, a vibrant and eclectic record that drew inspiration from Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, and classic American rock. It revealed his playful sense of humor and his fascination with the absurdities of modern life. He later released Friday Night (2016), a live album recorded at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right, and Generations (2020), a more introspective and politically charged work that explored themes of identity, responsibility, and hope. He lives with his wife, Jenny Shore, and their son, Alvin.

Instruments: Synthesizers, bass guitar, guitar, percussion, sitar, panpipes, trombone, omnichord, musical saw, double bass, concertina, clarinet, gadulka.

Infamous Antics & On-Stage Mayhem

• Duct-Taping Bandmates: During the Neon Bible tour, he developed a recurring prank of duct-taping bandmates Jeremy Gara and Sarah Neufeld together in the middle of a show.

• Setting Hair on Fire: In an act he later described as being "all for show," he once set Régine Chassagne's hair on fire during a performance.

• The Moat Incident: During a show in Sweden, Will decided the stage wasn’t big enough for his energy and launched himself straight into a moat that separated the band from the crowd. Soaked and grinning, he finished the song as if nothing had happened.

• Reckless Abandon: On the song "Rebellion (Lies)," a track on which he plays no instrument, he often runs manic laps around the stage. On one occasion, he sprained his ankle after tripping while running toward the fan barrier.

• Climbing the Rigging: A recurring act of insanity rather than a one-time stunt, Will made a habit of scaling the stage rigging just to hammer out a single, explosive drum hit. It became a signature move which the medical crew hates.

Richard Reed Parry

Multi-instrumentalist, Arranger, backing vocals

Richard Reed Parry was born on October 3, 1977, in Toronto, Ontario, into a deeply musical and intellectually curious family. His father, David Parry, was a folk musician, storyteller, and member of the Toronto Morris Men, while his mother, Caroline Balderston Parry, was a writer and musician. The Parry household was steeped in folk traditions, communal music-making, and Quaker values, an upbringing that shaped Richard’s deep sense of empathy.

He studied electroacoustic composition at Concordia University in Montreal, where his fascination with sound and texture began to take form. There, he became involved in Montreal’s vibrant avant-garde scene, playing in a variety of experimental and improvisational ensembles. It was through this community that he met future Arcade Fire members, assisting with the recording of the band’s self-titled 2002 EP before officially joining the group in 2003.

On stage, Parry’s presence contrasts sharply with his gentle demeanor offstage. Known for switching between upright bass, guitar, accordion, and drums, often mid-song.

Outside of Arcade Fire, Parry is a founding member of Bell Orchestre, an instrumental collective that also includes violinist Sarah Neufeld. Their music fuses classical composition with post-rock dynamics and ambient experimentation, an outlet for Parry’s more cerebral, architectural approach to sound. Bell Orchestre’s acclaimed albums, such as As Seen Through Windows (2009) and House Music (2021), showcase his ability to build emotion from silence and restraint rather than volume.

Parry’s work extends far beyond his bands. As a composer, he has collaborated with a range of artists and ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet, Bryce Dessner, yMusic, and the National Ballet of Canada. His solo album, Music for Heart and Breath (2014), released on Deutsche Grammophon, is an experimental work in which performers play in time with their own breathing and heartbeat, an idea that reflects both his fascination with the body as an instrument and his meditative, almost spiritual approach to sound.

In every project, Parry’s music feels both personal and cosmic: rooted in humanity, yet searching for something transcendent. Whether thundering on stage with Arcade Fire or crafting quiet, intricate compositions in solitude, he remains one of the band’s most enigmatic figures, an artist guided equally by intellect, emotion, and a relentless curiosity about what sound can mean.

Instruments: Guitar, bass guitar, double bass, piano, keyboards, synthesizers, organ, celesta, accordion, drums, percussion.

Notable Moments & Anecdotes
• Bleeding on Stage: Parry's performances were so intensely physical that he would often bleed at every show, leaving blood stains on the piano and other equipment.

• The Falling Amp Incident: At a show in Vancouver, Will Butler was suspending him upside down when he lost his grip. Parry fell, and an amplifier toppled onto him. His neck was saved only by the motorcycle helmet he was wearing, which was being used as a percussion instrument.

• Concussion by Ceiling Tile: During a show in a small venue, he struck the ceiling with his double bass, dislodging a tile that fell on his head and gave him a concussion. He played through the rest of the set.

• Brief On-Stage Departure: In one of the band's early, volatile performances, he quit the band mid-set after an argument with Win Butler, only to rejoin later in the show.

Despite Arcade Fire's international fame and success following Funeral, Richard Reed Parry drove a dull brown 1996 Toyota Camry which he had purchased on eBay. This led to a humorous encounter at the Canadian border when a guard stopped him: The guard, seeing that the car contained gold records and recognizing the band's name, asked, "Arcade Fire? But you guys are famous! Why don't you get a new one?". Parry, frustrated by the line of questioning regarding his chosen mode of transportation, insisted to the guard, "THIS IS MY NEW CAR". The rest of the band members were later laughing "hysterically" over the story, with drummer Jeremy Gara recalling that Richard "was so mad when he came back," fuming about the encounter.

Sarah Neufeld

Sarah Neufeld

Violin, Vocals

Sarah Neufeld is a Canadian violinist and composer best known for her work with Arcade Fire and the instrumental collective Bell Orchestre. Born in British Columbia and raised on Vancouver Island, she started playing violin as a child and developed an early fascination with how the instrument could carry emotion, tension, and movement all at once.

After moving to Montreal to study music, Neufeld became part of the city’s independent music scene in the early 2000s, a creative community built around experimentation and collaboration. At the time, she was playing in Bell Orchestre, a band she co-founded with Richard Reed Parry, Stefan Schneider, and others, combining classical training with post-rock and ambient influences.

Her path into Arcade Fire came through those same circles. Parry had started working with the band during the recording of their first EP in 2002, and as their sound began to expand, they were looking for a violinist who could bring both control and chaos to the stage. Neufeld joined in 2003, just as Arcade Fire was starting to find its voice.

Her violin became a defining part of the band’s sound. Whether it was the soaring lines on Funeral or the swelling arrangements on The Suburbs, her playing helped give Arcade Fire their sense of emotional scale. On stage, she played with precision and intensity, sometimes almost dancing with the violin, moving with the music.

Even after stepping back from full-time membership in 2013, Neufeld has remained part of the band’s live lineup, bringing her sound and presence to their tours.

Outside of Arcade Fire, she’s continued to explore her own musical world through Bell Orchestre and as a solo artist. Her solo albums, Hero Brother (2013), The Ridge (2016), and Detritus (2021), show a more intimate side of her writing, often blending minimalist repetition, breath, and movement.
Her music feels less about melody in a traditional sense, and more about what sound can do to a body or a space.

Instruments: Violin, piano, keyboards, synthesizers, tambourine, xylophone.

Notable Moments & Anecdotes:

During the band's famously chaotic early club shows, which were characterized by intense physical energy and limited space, Sarah Neufeld frequently performed standing on a chair for the duration of the concert. She adopted this unusual position because she was worried the other band members' "frenzied" movements would cause them to crash into her and break her violin. Neufeld confessed to having "instrument fear" during these wild early shows

Neufeld and bassist Tim Kingsbury were never officially told by Win Butler or Régine Chassagne that they were full members of Arcade Fire. When discussing how they eventually learned they were "official," Kingsbury mentioned reading it in an article. Neufeld joked about this informal status, quipping that she would "Google myself for my status" to confirm her place in the band.

When describing why she eventually joined the highly energetic band, despite initially being involved solely with Bell Orchestre, Neufeld described Arcade Fire as a "magical bunch of people dancing around and shouting at the sky," making the group hard to resist.

Despite the chaos and theatrical flair of the band, Neufeld reflected on the making of the Funeral album, describing it as a "crazy time" when they were "super-scruffy young people". She admitted that the record remains so emotionally compelling that she "still well up if I hear certain songs from that album" .

Jeremy Gara

Jeremy Gara

Drums • Percussion

Jeremy Gara joined Arcade Fire in 2004, right before the release of Funeral, completing what became the band’s core lineup. Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, he grew up surrounded by music and community, the kind of person who was always in a band, always playing in basements or small clubs around the city. Before Arcade Fire, he played in Kepler, a post-rock band known for their slow, atmospheric songs that often felt like sketches of quiet emotions.

When he joined Arcade Fire, the group was still running things out of vans and garages, handling their own gear, booking their own shows. Jeremy not only drummed but also helped with tour logistics in those early years, sometimes acting as the de facto tour manager.

He became part of the band’s creative core during their rise, contributing to every album from Funeral onward. Fans remember moments when he’d lose himself completely in the music, hair flying, drumsticks cracking. Outside the band, Jeremy still lives in Montreal and continues to make solo music, focusing on more abstract, experimental sounds.

Instruments: Drums, percussion, guitar, keyboards.

Notable Moments & Anecdotes:

Near the end of the Funeral tour, Gara was acting as the tour manager but had left Boston without depositing the tour's receipts in a bank. This chaotic logistical failure resulted in Win Butler and Régine Chassagne counting approximately 50,000 in cash in a paper bag in their hotel room. The intense experience of counting the band's unexpected fortune inspired Win to write the centerpiece song of the subsequent album, "Windowsill".

During the recording of The Suburbs, Jeremy Gara, along with Régine, spent an entire afternoon in his basement fixing an old organ from Régine's attic using duct tape and a bottle lid.

He joined Arcade Fire after being impressed by their intensity. An early Arcade Fire incarnation had supported a group Gara played in, and Gara noted, "They killed us that night, and all the other groups on the bill." He explained that Arcade Fire had a "do-or-die thing" and a "need to make a special connection with the audience, which we still have. We still fight for attention, even now that we have it"

Gara joined the band after they struggled to find the right drummer, one who could handle the "riveting New Order shuffle" and who was "fine to move out of the way when Régine wants the kit"

During one particularly unhinged Funeral-era show at the Great American Music Hall, Win Butler got so caught up in the chaos of “Power Out” that he barreled straight across the stage and crashed headfirst into Jeremy Gara’s drum set.

Tim Kingsbury

Bass guitarist, multi-instrumentalist.

Tim Kingsbury joined Arcade Fire in 2003, around the same time as Will Butler, just before the band began recording Funeral. Before that, he’d been a steady presence in Montreal’s tight-knit indie scene, playing in local bands like Clark and sometimes filling in for friends’ projects, the kind of musician everyone trusted to make a song better. His arrival helped solidify Arcade Fire’s lineup at a crucial moment, grounding the band’s explosive energy with his quiet, versatile musicianship.

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Kingsbury grew up playing guitar and bass, developing an ear for melody that would later define much of Arcade Fire’s rhythmic backbone. He was never one for the spotlight; instead, he became the anchor, the dependable force holding the band’s sprawling live performances together. While Win and Will Butler brought chaos, Tim brought balance.

On stage, his focus and restraint stood in sharp contrast to the surrounding frenzy. Fans often remember him as the calm eye of the storm, steady behind his bass, occasionally stepping up to guitar, keyboards, or even backing vocals when the arrangement called for it.

Outside of Arcade Fire, Tim’s musical curiosity has taken him in different directions. He’s collaborated with Wolf Parade, worked on solo projects under the name Sam Patch, and explored electronic textures and folk influences that reveal a quieter, introspective side of his artistry.

Despite his understated public persona, Kingsbury’s role in Arcade Fire has always been foundational.

Instruments: Bass guitar, guitar, double bass, keyboards, backing vocals, trumpet.

Notable Moments & Anecdotes:

Self-Deprecating Stance: Kingsbury recognizes his relatively restrained stage presence compared to his bandmates. He once joked, "There's the tall red-headed kid with the wide open mouth beating his drum [Richard]; the tall blonde Texan who is scaring the hell out of everyone in the room [Win]; the shorter Haitian-French girl who's dancing around and being really intense [Régine]. I don't even think I stand out very much".

Kingsbury was recruited by Richard Reed Parry, who joked that his own "great winking light helped draw in dozens of moths, as well as his former band-mate Tim Kingsbury. Tim killed the moths, joined the band, and then skillfully played whatever instrument was open to him".

Kingsbury's biography in one source includes a peculiar, unnecessary note that "Band members often tease Tim about his weight, but he's not really that fat. He's a damn good fellow".

Tim is allergic to mango, haha.

Before joining Arcade Fire in 2003, Kingsbury spent years cold-calling doctors to do surveys for a pharmaceutical market research company. The sources add that he has been known to perform in a blood-stained shirt, but clarify that the two facts are not thought to be connected.
