Oh, it sounds nice how they make an effort to preserve history back there! I've been to some completely industrialised cities around Europe and I can relate to how you feel – they just have a totally soulless atmosphere and are a bit bleak to be in. I'm pretty lucky that my city, Norwich has a lot of ancient stuff preserved, although sadly it is also really overcrowded in the UK so living here costs a lot. Having your own animals living in the garden sounds like a really nice wholesome thing to work towards! Did you ever play the Harvest Moon games? Reminds me of that a bit :)
No need to apologise, it's nice to hear from you and interesting to hear about your life! I hope things do get better quickly in terms of work/covid so you don't have to struggle anymore, hope the license comes soon too :D
Yeah I've always lived here, one parent English and one Scottish, but I've always lived in England. It's nice here in some ways – the countryside and historical buildings everywhere are really beautiful, that overcrowding I mentioned can mean everything gets a bit crammed together and land/property costs loads, which also means there's a huge class divide here. There are food banks and lots of homeless people in every city, even though it's supposedly a rich country. I guess that's the same story in the US too though?
Oh, and it wasn't actually long distance! She moved over here to do a PhD so I actually just met her locally. that was a while back and didn't work out, but it was interesting learning more about American first hand!

Yeah, I haven't been there but I've heard things about the general attitude in Tennessee! Actually, weird coincidence but I dated someone from Knoxville for a couple of years so I heard a lot of stories about that area. Your Washington plan sounds like a great one – the countryside around there looks amazing. I also love the look of Vermont, although I have no idea what living there would be like. What's California like to live in?
Shit about the daycare program getting full up, that also sucks! I wish I knew some good advice to give you on ways to escape poverty but I'm still stuck in it myself, so probably not much use there
I would recommend those books if you fancy something challenging (and sometimes really difficult writing style to understand, especially the first two I mentioned), but also yeah they'll probably make you want to run away a bit. I remember finding them really exciting and making me want to change the world, but it was also a bit frustrating because I had no idea how to actually do that!

I can understand how you feel, I've been living with the same struggle too :( When I was a teenager and had the time/freedom from financial responsibility I was so full of idealism and utopian political ideas. I got really into reading books like Society of the Spectacle and The Revolution of Everyday life, Slavoj Zizek and other anticapitalist stuff like that. But then as soon as I stopped studying and had to start earning, all those ideals got replaced by just having to find ways to survive!
Ah that sucks, yeah sounds really tough. Are you in the US somewhere? I'm actually having to look for a new place right now too (even though the UK is in lockdown, landlords are dicks) and rent here is insanely high as well. I really hope things are going to get pushed to breaking point where the governments have to start going easier on people cause it feels like the class divide is just getting wider and wider these days!

Also, I totally agree that money isn't the most important aspect at all.

Maybe things that are homemade and a little bit amateur are actually better if they're genuine and have love poured into them!

And yes to nature being your safe place – I feel the same! getting away from civilisation even for a short walk can be enough to remind me how small all our day to day worries and insecurities actually are. Like here I am worrying things people say to each other, money etc as if they're the whole of existence, but then just being in the woods or at the beach I'm surrounded by stuff that has been around thousands of times longer than the span of a whole human life, and it reminds me how easy it is to lose perspective!
