I think you could start with Krita. It's free and it has a lot of good stuff in it.

That's what I use personally even our animation teacher agrees that it's a good one. If you learn it you can get used to other programs lot quicker.

Some of my classmates also use Flipaclip and FireAlpaca. There's also Opentoonz and Blender but those progrems are a lot more complicated for a beginner. (and ofc all of them are completely free :DD)

We mostly use Adobe programs cause that's the industry standard.

When it comes to Adobe programs we supposed to use Photoshop to animate There is no way in hell that I'll do that

We also use After Effects for puppet animation but of course it's main use supposed to be touch up work. We make our characters in Adobe Illustrator and save out the moving pieces separately.

We use Zbrush for 3d modeling but it's quite terrible. The different versions of that programs are incompatible with each other, also there are no tutorials of it so we can only relay on our teacher. It's better if you just learn Blender, that's what I'm gonna do this summer.

And of course we use Premiere pro to edit our video.
