*:･ﾟ✧LilPinkPeppermintCandies 🦄ִֶָ🪽་༘࿐ˎˊ˗	1760243077 —Jirai kei origin rant I just wanna start this off by saying im not 100% sure if all of this is correct and most of the information is from memory because i cant back anything up right now since my wifi isnt too good, so please correct me if you notice any misinformation. The fashion started during around 2020-2021, so during the time of covid. From what I know,there was this place in japan called Kabukicho, and it was known for being one of the most dangerous areas of japan. A lot of people refer to it as a red-light district, meaning it concentrates on sex-orientated business.Im pretty sure the government or whatever was trying to make it more of a tourist spot for whatever reason, and in doing so they added a lot of forms of entertainment there, such as a statue (im not sure of what) and a really big cinema. Because they were making it seem like a very lively place to be, it attracted a lot of young people from the ages of 12-19 who unfortunately lived in a bad environment and/or were abused or witnessed domestic abuse. Thats when a lot of younger people decided to try and run away to Kabuchiko to escape their home lives.to no ones surprise it didnt affect the quality of their mental wellness in a good way. A lot of very young people ended up going towards a path of drugs and substance abuse to escape their problems, and a lot of the time they unfortunately would resort to prostitution as a means to make money. Im pretty sure that these kids were labeled as “Toyoko kids”- i’m not sure where the name comes from, but it was used to refer to kids who suffered from abuse and neglect that were drawn to sex work. Since “Toyoko kids” had ran away to Kabuchiko to seek refuge from the abuse they had witnessed or suffered all while being so young, it meant a lot of them were easily impressionable and vulnerable, which wasnt good considering that Kabuchiko wasnt and arguable still isnt a good environment for kids and teenagers. There was also a lot of host clubs around Kabukicho. Host clubs are nightclubs where men primarily serve women, and the entire point is that the hosts are kind of supposed to persuade their clients into ordering as many drinks as possible, through many different means, but most commonly feigning romantic interest. It didnt help that a lot of young people went to these host clubs and spent a lot of money there, because for those kids prostitution was the most common way to make money in the area.In kabukicho a lot of people spot groups of homeless teenagers partying, drinking, or smoking by the streets. The amount of runaway kids there kind of formed a community, which I presume is why theres a label for them (toyoko kids). Now i don't know where the appearance of Jirai Kei fashion came from besides the fact that its commonly associated with muted pinks, reds, and blacks, and pien makeup, which is basically just makeup that follows a “Sad” look, with droopy big eyes and pouty lips, but it became a thing because it got popular within the groups of these teenagers. The term Jirai kei is derived from the term Jirai Onna, which directly translates to “landmine woman”. Its called this because the fashion was typically worn by young mentally ill women,and it stirred up a stereotype associating the fashion with woman who were like “landmines” as in they were unstable and explosive towards people/their partner, and commonly displayed symptoms of borderline personality disorder, and part of this is because of how mental health isn't very easy to access in Japan. So now you know, when people say “the dark side of jirai kei” they’re usually referring the origin and how its commonly associated with mentally ill teenagers, and the unfortunate substance abuse and sex work that these teenagers engaged in. There are a lot of different arguments as to whether you should wear jirai kei if your mentally ill or not, but the majority believe that fashion is fashion and you should wear whatever you’re comfortable with. Its just important to acknowledge the unfortunate origin of the style. I also would like to mention that even now in Japan, the stereotype is not as prominent as it used to be, and jirai kei has become a relatively popular fashion style for teenagers outside of kabukicho.
