I would suggest you to watch/read 'Chihayafuru' - sport (well, sort of) and josei mixed together!
'Fruits Basket (the remake, not the OG anime)', a pure shōjo, made me cry a river too.
Then there are four of my must-watches: the philosophical and queer Shōjo Kakumei Utena and another pure 'school-situations': Kodomo no Omocha.
Then you have Yazawa's NANA and Moyoco Anno's Hataraki Man (the manga).
I find most of these highly relatable.
Oh, if you like NANA, there is also Yazawa's Paradise Kiss.
