Who I'd like to meet:
โDo not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.โ
A humanoid robot scientist with nothing but the urge to conquer.
The reverbed steps of a leather boot hitting the sterile lab floor piqued Minnie's attention. She floated aimlessly in the human test tube, her hands pressed against the cold glass. However, the liquid inside the tube was not nearly as still as she felt and thrummed under her palms. Her trail of thought was interrupted as her eyes relayed upon a man- no... A *thing* stood in front of her with a clipboard.
His presence made her uneasy, and his every breath was directed to keep an eye on her at all times. He looked back and called over a nearby scientist. She shuffled over quickly, half-hazard glancing over his shoulder to see what he needed.
"Sir," she said quietly, almost too quietly for her to hear even in this state.
"How is the condition of Experiment 001." The individual spoke, his voice modulated and robot-like. That's precisely it. He-isn't human. It stayed the same tone and loudness. It echoed from the walls like an echo chamber. His words weren't even spoken aloud but projected within her mind. He wore a black trench coat, and when he stepped aside, she saw a name tag hanging from his neck by a chain connected to a small computer chip in the base of his throat.
Minnie swallowed thickly.
"The subject seems unstable." Her voice barely rose above a whisper. The man in the black trench coat turned around, glaring at the scientist. "We've been running some simulations on it, and there are signs of human-like intelligence-" she continued hurriedly before being cut off abruptly.
"5.6 million dollars." He said, his voice velvety and monotone.
"What?" The scientist stuttered. "Wha - What did you say?"
The man in the suit turned his head slightly away. He took a step forward, causing the scientist to retreat a little.
He was silent again. "She has already cost us more than 5 million dollars," he repeated. "If *you* cannot make her function correctly, *I* will be forced to terminate the experiment."
"But sir!" the scientist protested.
The man in the black coat glared down at her. "There is no argument." He said sharply.
"You *will* make her function correctly." The man dressed in black made direct eye contact with Minnie. Her knees trembled. But she didn't look away. The man stared at her so intently that she knew it wasn't him staring through the glass. He broke the line of contact, turning sharply. The familiar clink of his shoes slowly stepped away, down the long hallway.
Minnie watched him until she was sure he was gone. As they faded into the distance, they became distant echoes. Minnie remained frozen where she floated, her heart racing so fast that it ached.
