Sal Fisher, otherwise known as "Sally Face", is the titular main protagonist of the game. The son of Henry and Diane Fisher, a tragic accident during his childhood resulted in the death of his mother and left his face severely scarred, requiring him to wear a prosthetic face. Years following this incident, Sal and his dad moved to the town of Nockfell for a fresh start, residing in Room 402 of Addison Apartments.
The game centers around several events throughout Sal’s life, focusing on his investigation into the sinister mysteries that surround his new home and his attempts to stop the Devourers of God.
Sal’s most prominent feature is his prosthetic face mask, which is primarily white with a light pink patch over the right eye. He has blue eyes, the right one being an ocular prosthesis. From what has been seen of his face: he has a large scar that runs diagonally across the right side of his mouth, splitting his lips and exposing his teeth; a scar on his left cheek, as well as several other smaller scars scattered across the rest of his face; a dent on the right side of his lower jaw; and the cartilage of his nose is completely missing. He has shoulder length bright blue hair which he usually keeps tied up in pigtails and two piercings in each ear. He is noticeably short, being the second shortest among his friend group.
As a teenager, Sal wore a black sweater, ripped red jeans, and blue and white sneakers. In "The Wretched" he wore a black hoodie, a pair of blue fingerless gloves, and green earmuffs while out in the snow.
As an adult, he wears an outfit identical to the one he wore as a teenager and his hair down. His fringe has grown asymmetrically, with the right side covering his right eye. His prosthetic now has what are presumably pieces of adhesive tape holding the pieces together. Following his arrest, he wears a tattered orange prison jumpsuit with the inmate number 081486.
Sal was an adventurous teenage boy. He seemed to be resourceful and had the ability to keep his cool during stressful situations, as seen through his interactions with ghosts. He came off as friendly and polite regardless of rude or frightened responses he may get from people who are reacting to his prosthetic and was openly affectionate of his friends. Sal frequently offered a listening ear or kind word to others, even to those who have been unfriendly to him, as evidenced in "The Bologna Incident" when he comforted a crying Travis in the boy's bathroom. His compassion and willingness to help people regardless of their appearance or standoffish behavior was demonstrated time and again. Though he was a kind person, Sal was capable of snapping back at those who try to hurt him through the use of sarcasm.
In "The Bologna Incident", his quick wit was demonstrated in response to bullying from Travis. He did not report the resulting punch in the face from Travis, however, and he did not correct comments made towards him out of ignorance rather than malice (such as when Miss Rosenberg misgenders him), suggesting that he didn't like confrontation. He also didn't seem to approve of violence, as he protested when his friends even jokingly threatened to kill Travis for bullying Sal.
Whilst Sal is male, he doesn't seem to care how people perceive him, or about traditional gender roles, as evidenced by his traditionally feminine hairstyle, and how he didn't bother to correct Miss Rosenberg when she referred to Sal as a girl upon meeting him. In addition, upon meeting Megan for the first time, she tells him, "Pigtails are for girls, silly!" to which he responds that nobody ever said only girls could wear their hair in pigtails and that he likes the style, too.
As an adult, Sal appeared to be significantly more jaded and less trusting of others and opened himself to others with great hesitation.
On August 16th 1984, the Fisher family went on a picnic to a scenic and sunny location, where a young Sal finds a dog and is eager to pet it. After some prodding, his mother allows Sal to visit the animal. However, it's revealed that the "dog" was, in fact, a man wearing a dog mask (presumably Kenneth Phelps) and wielding a shotgun. His intent was to end the boy's life due to the prophecy foretelling that a young boy would foil the Devourers Of God's plans. The boy survived the encounter but at the cost of his mother's life. For the years to come, Sal would maintain that his mother was killed by a man, not a wild animal, even if his psychiatrist and father didn't believe him.
After a fateful visit to the hospital, Sal had to adapt to a new life with his prosthetic face and internalized the nickname bullies would later give him: Sally Face.
Move to Addison Apartments
Unknown circumstances ripped the two remaining members of the Fisher family from New Jersey and into the mysterious abode of Addison Apartments Room 402.
Halfway through unpacking, Sal decided to take a break, and, after sharing his feelings about the move to his father, left to explore the complex. After meeting the lovely Lisa Johnson, Sal is introduced to Lisa's heavy metal loving son Larry Johnson, who quickly became friends with the newcomer.
After Larry confided within Sal the details of Mrs. Sanderson's murder at the hands of Charley Mansfield, the boy is quick to offer his assistance. After devising a plan of action and receiving a walkie-talkie from Larry, Sal returns to his room to await his friend's signal.
After the officers are pulled away by a fake report of a robbery, Sal enters Room 403 and witnesses the carnage committed by Mansfield, the body outline of Sanderson, and an empty space between two Glitter Ponies.
Upon returning to Larry, they decided that they had to retrieve the stolen Glitter Pony from Charley and turn it into the authorities. A quick visit to Charley's room made it clear to Sal that the collector wouldn't let him anywhere near his toys, so he had to find another way.
When visiting the fifth floor, Sal finds old laxatives in the bathroom of Room 504 and the ghost of the young Megan Holmes, but the supernatural being is too scared to speak to Sal for long. Regardless, Sal continued with his plan.
After adding the laxatives to a cup of Addison Tea, Sal managed to get Charley to abandon his watch over his beloved collection to attend to more pressing concerns in the restroom. Sal snags the toy and turns it into the Detective on the first floor. Mansfield is arrested and hauled away.
When Sal leaves the apartment to see Charley off, curiosity pulls him towards a coroner's van, where Mrs. Sanderson's decaying corpse lay, bagged, and awaiting processing.
A few months into Sal's stay at Addison Apartments, he began to become plagued by nightmares. One particular dream places him at the picnic where his mother was murdered, and later shifted into Larry's shoes when he was fixing the toilet for Sandy Sanderson on the day of her demise.
After being devoured by the toilet, Sal meets the Glitter Pony he used to incriminate Charley, begging for water. When the plumbing is restored, the Glitter Pony becomes bloated, serving as a bridge for Sal to return to the "surface" to witness Mansfield murder Sanderson. A trail of bloodied footprints leads to a seated Charley Mansfield, admonishing Sal for his actions. Sal is jolted from sleep when Charley's skin peels off to reveal a coal-black demon with red eyes.
Sal confides the details of his most recent vision in Larry, who is skeptical of the whole thing. Despite this, Larry takes Sal to his tree house to tell him the story of his past. Sal immediately recognizes the Red-Eyed Demon from Larry's story (having seen it in the apartment's kitchen on his first day) and offers to help lift his "curse". After retrieving an enigmatic Puzzle Box from a trunk containing the possessions of Larry's father Jim Johnson, the two return indoors.
After a failed attempt to summon Megan Holmes from the bathroom of room 504, Larry refers Sal to Todd Morrison, the resident brainiac, and believer in the unknown. Sal, eager to show Larry that spirits do exist, doesn't hesitate to pay Todd a visit.
Upon entering Todd's apartment Room 202, Sal meets Ashley Campbell. Todd agrees to help Sal by modifying his Gear Boy to better detect supernatural activity. After cannibalizing Larry's radio antennae and Walkie Talkie, the device was ready for testing in Todd's restroom. It was here that they drew out the weeping ghost of Greg Montague who is quickly scared away by the Red-Eyed Demon.
Todd recovers from the initial shock of the supernatural occurrences and advises Sal to test it further while he does some digging into the history of the murders in Addison Apartments. Sal's tests lead to the discovery of various levels of a mysterious game throughout the apartment complex and the Phantom of Jim Johnson. Sal doesn't share any of his discoveries with his friends.
When Megan remained hidden, even with the improved tracking device, Sal returned to Todd and learned that the officers that arrested Charley were not registered in the police database and the Charley Mansfield that was arrested looked nothing like the one they knew. Additionally, old reports of Megan's corpse being found by Lake Wendigo shows pictures of the girl when she was still alive.
Sal retrieves Megan's necklace from the same lost found that held the Super Gear Boy Cartridge, brings Larry back to Room 504, and uses the Super Gear Boy and cross necklace to successfully draw out Megan Holmes.
After yet another brief interaction that revealed a friendship between Jim Johnson and Megan's father Luke Holmes, she is scared away by the demon, leaving an awestruck Larry and Sal behind. They both agreed that the apartment room warranted further investigation. Larry left Sal to retrieve a crowbar from David, a former drug addict, while he returned to care for his sick mother.
A visit inside of David's Room 302 led Sal to the discovery of the missing piece to Jim Johnson's Puzzle Box. Before returning the crowbar to Larry, Sal solved the box to discover an odd Computer Chip inside. When the chip merges with Todd's computer, the Phantom gives Sal a garbled message about a "red ball". When the vision ends, Sal finds the chip has somehow been replaced by a Rubix cube, with neither Todd nor Larry having any memory of the item.
Using the crowbar to break into Room 403, Sal conversed briefly with the spirit of the recently deceased Mrs. Sanderson, before she too was frightened away by the demon.
Returning to Room 504, Sal was finally able to enter the bedroom and summon the ghost of Stacy Holmes, who says nothing before disappearing. Further in the bedroom, Sal found a hole in the wall leading to another room. Upon entering the hole, Sal summoned the hanging ghost of Luke Holmes. When Sal attempted to speak to him, the ghost shed its skin to reveal an agitated Red-Eyed Demon. Before the demon could do anything it was removed with a special device created by Todd and used by an intervening Larry.
When the threat had clearly passed, Sal comforted a grief-stricken Larry for the "abandonment" of his father.
Most of the events following the disappearance of the Red-Eyed Demon proved mostly normal for Sal, (sans the disappearance of multiple students) who had become good friends with Todd, Ashley, Chug, and Maple. Events returned to the paranormal the day Sal had a math test.
Sal, having completed his math examination well ahead of the rest of his class, distracted himself with doodles before dozing off. He is abruptly awoken by Mrs. Packerton who assures him that he did well on his test, earning ire from the bully: Travis Phelps. When the class reaches its conclusion, Travis confronts Sal and Ashley in the halls and punches the former in the face, and draws blood in the process. Sal declines all offers from his companions to get even with Travis, insisting that it would only worsen the situation with him.
The following day during lunch, Sal notes that the bologna being served tasted funnier than it usually did, causing his friends to spew their speculation over the meat's origin. Instead of leaving the matter a mystery, Sal opted to investigate and his group (excluding Chug and Maple) agreed to help.
After being harshly turned away by the lunch lady Kim Yazzie, Sal turns to alternate solutions. Suspecting that Kim was responsible for the bologna's condition, Sal teamed up with Larry and took a picture of the woman's file. As Kim Yazzie was a former Amateur Nature Photographer, Sal took a picture of a bird and presented it to Kim who was then willing to give the boy a sample of the bologna and the identity of the school's supplier: Mrs. Packerton.
On his way back to the labs to test the bologna samples, Sal meets a weeping Travis in the restroom. Although Travis threatens Sal, the boy stays and comforts him, assuring him that if he ever needed a friend all he had to do was ask.
After the bologna was examined, Sal's group concluded that they needed more information on where Packerton got the bologna. Before the lunch period was over, Sal and Larry broke into Packerton's classroom and opened her desk drawer to find many cult-like objects, including an item similar to Jim Johnson's puzzle box. Not long after Sal is plagued with another vision of The Phantom who delivers an indecipherable message before fading away.
Investigating Room 201
That evening while Packerton was away, Sal and Larry broke into her apartment to find the severed head of a goat in the refrigerator and two locked doors. Behind one of the doors was Mr. Packerton, hooked up to a life support machine and stuck in a vegetative state. Sal uses the Super Gear Boy to summon Mr. Packerton as a ghost. The spirit denies knowledge of the bologna's origins and instead begs to be euthanized. Sal complies and pulls the plug.
After being forced into hiding by Ashley, whom they had mistaken for Packerton, Larry found a key to the next room: a butcher shop stained with blood, decorated with newspaper clippings of missing children, and a pentagram-decorated footlocker fridge. Sal opens the freezer to find the deboned flesh of his missing classmates.
Disgusted, but satisfied that the origin of the lunchmeat had been uncovered they decided to leave and devise a way to deal with Packerton. Before they could complete their escape, Ashley discovers a hidden trash chute behind a picture of a farm and accidentally falls down into the bowels of the apartment building. Stricken with panic, the two boys act fast to save their friend.
Sal and Larry retrieve Todd and enter a room in the basement concealed by the Lost and Found shelves. Although the room is vacant, for the most part, Sal discovers a cellar door leading deeper below ground. They enter the temple of the Devourers of God and station Todd at the entrance to keep the entrance gate open. After navigating through the temple's maze and pressure plate puzzle gates, Sal and Larry come across a pedestal before another gate.
Sal placed the piece he stole from Packerton into the pedestal which opened the gate, leading to a room filled with piles of bones from the Cult's victims. Miraculously, Ashley was unharmed and was discovered merely unconscious atop one of the piles.
After safely extracting Ashley from the temple, the group wanted to know what they should do to ensure Packerton can't harm anyone else. Much to Sal's horror, his friends suggest killing her. Sal convinced them to sleep on it, but the next morning they learned that there was no need to take action as Packerton was killed by a drunk driver on her way home.
Five years later
After Packerton's death, life returned to normalcy for Sal and his gang. Following Henry and Lisa's wedding, Sal became Larry's stepbrother, Ashley left for art school, and Todd and Neil set up a home for the friends to share during their years in college.
But it was not to last. Sal's nightmares returned and the ghosts of Addison Apartments vanished. These events prompted Sal and his step-brother to investigate the cursed building one last time before Larry officially moved in with the rest of the “Ghostnabbers”.
After catching up with the residents and investigating the temple of the Devourers of God, Sal left on a date with Ashley to Lake Wendigo. The two caught up on life and Sal confided in her the details of his returning nightmares and the ongoing investigation on the local cult.
The Endless One's Infection
When Sal returned home, he received disturbing text messages from Larry. When his step-brother didn't answer his cell phone, Sal rushed to the treehouse behind the apartment building, only to find Larry's suicide note detailing the purpose of his actions: the darkness was starting to infect him.
Later, according to what Ashley said in Sal's trial, Ash came to see Sal and thought he was drunk. She argued with him for the first time and let Henry and Lisa know that Sal was not okay. She later regrets not staying with Sal.
Donning the Necrolight Guitar and requesting the assistance of Todd, Sal investigated the treehouse to find a single, empty alcohol bottle on the floor. Before a proper investigation could be made, Sal was teleported to the roof of the Apartment building, right by the Pillar by Alyson Rosenberg's Ghost.
With the help of Larry's Ghost, Sal destroyed the pillar and (temporarily) freed the residents from the Endless One's grasp.
Upon entering the room of Terrence Addison, Sal learned the truth. The Endless One had made an effort to infect the building before, and succeeded in possessing all the members of the Addison clan and was halted only by a young Terrence who was able to fight off his influence long enough to slaughter his family and prevent him from spreading. The Endless One manifested inside Terrence and had been fighting to control him for decades.
Using the Necrolight Guitar, Sal killed the Endless One and briefly met the real Terrence Addison who gave him a most dreadful mission: Kill all who were infected by the Dark or the shadows will consume more people. After great deliberation, Sal conceded and killed every single resident of the apartment building, including his own father.
After the deed was done, Sal left the building to be greeted by a horrified Ashley Campbell and the Nockfell Police Department.
Seiko Ayase is a spirit medium and is Momo's grandmother with whom she lives with ever since she was a child. Their relationship was strained long ago when Momo accused her grandmother of being a phony spirit medium after Seiko forced her to perform a routine ritual out in public that resulted in her being humiliated by kids her age. Momo soon forgave Seiko after reflecting on how she was more mad at the kids making fun of her grandmother than towards her and chose to believe in her work as a spirit medium. As a family, the two deeply care and love each other.
Momo often has moments of being fed up with Seiko's foolishness directed towards her, such as being teased at or forced to do things for a favor. In light of this, she remains appreciative of the woman who took her in when she was a child and openly cares for her well-being, having expressed to Okarun her anger towards the Turbo Granny for harming Seiko with a curse and sought to avenge her. She has faith in Seiko's capabilities to protect her. After a bandaged-up Mr. Mantis Shrimp makes a sudden move from regaining consciousness, Momo confidently warned him to not get any bright ideas with her, Okarun, and Aira by pointing out that Seiko was present with them. She also heavily relies on her for help whenever the Family are faced with a problem involving the paranormal. She tried calling for Seiko to return from her trip in Hokkaido to help the Family stop the Kur from invading the Earth and made sure to leave a note asking for help at their residential area in case she came back. After being overwhelmed with the problem of trying to stop the Kur's main force from commencing their invasion on Kamigoe City and needing to get passed Reiko Kashima who suddenly appeared just as the invaders' whole army made it past the warp gate, Momo fell into despair and could only wish to see Seiko again. By the time the invasion ended, and she had returned from her trip, Momo affectionately clung to Seiko, in light of her grandmother's annoyance, as she was cooking for everyone. Momo disapproves of Seiko's tough attitude that makes her self-reliant when it comes to handling her own problems, as she worries that her grandmother is pushing herself too much by not asking their friends and allies for help.
Although she previously had not fully forgiven Momo for doubting her work as a spirit medium until she sincerely apologized, Seiko did not let it affect her care and protectiveness for her granddaughter. Knowing how dangerous the Turbo Granny was after she had fused with the Earthbound Spirit Crab, Seiko initially disapproved of having Momo getting involved with Okarun after he was cursed by the yokai but changed her mind in being supportive of her after hearing her resolve to help him. Before having her leave to face the Turbo Granny, Seiko embraced Momo as she requested that she come out of the situation alive and prayed to the gods to give her and Okarun protection.
Aside from Miko and Muko being her closest female friends at school, Okarun is Momo's closest male friend in and outside of school. While on the lookout to retrieve Okarun's missing kintama, the two support each other when dealing with the paranormal. Due to her massive admiration for the actor Ken Takakura, Momo finds it difficult to refer to Takakura by his real name, as she becomes flustered every time it's mentioned. She came up with a solution was that she would give him the nickname "Okarun" since he is an occult fanatic.
Momo first met Okarun after she stepped in to protect him from being bullied by some of his classmates. She then wanted no further connections with him after this good deed but found herself competing with Okarun on whether spirits or aliens exist, which resulted in the spirit that she told him to investigate stealing his chinko. Upon offering to help him retrieve it, Momo learned from Okarun that he had wanted to be friends with her the moment they met since he had spent his entire life without one, but also heard from him that he had given up on this after concluding that they lived in two different worlds for this to happen. Momo did not agree and explained to him that his problem with making friends was that he always jumped to conclusions, believing that no one would like him, and proceeded to tell him that she was willing to get to know him more.
After the two worked together to successfully defeat the Turbo Granny, Momo continued to associate herself with Okarun and saw him as the only person in school she could talk to about the paranormal, which she very eager to do once her class was finished. However, her friendship with him was almost short lived after getting into an accident where they exchanged insults in denial of having romantic feelings for each other after blindly bumped into each other and being caught by Miko and Muko who assumed so. During class, Momo continued to deny to her classmates that Okarun was her boyfriend and was too agitated to talk to him after he rushed over to her with an emergency concerning his kintama. Momo's behavior towards Okarun was noted by Miko to be rather out of character since she knew that she would have simply right off the situation as a joke if he was her friend. Later, Momo spotted Okarun with Aira and overheard her talking to her friends about how she used her charms to make a fool out of him, prompting her to use her powers to drop a basin on Aira's head to defend Okarun and snarking at her as she came over to Okarun's side wanting to walk home with him. The two then proceeded to forgive each other and made up afterwards.
Momo's friendship with Okarun once again became strained after she had caught him secretly with Aira at school. Having been lied to by Okarun earlier about him needing to write a report in private, Momo lost trust in him and walked off feeling too upset to hear him out or cooperate with him properly to defeat the Serpo. Their friendship soon rekindled after Okarun reassured Momo that the scene was an accident.
As her friend, Momo deeply cares for Okarun's well-being. During their conflict against the Evil Eye and the Tsuchinoko, Momo promised Okarun that she would come back to rescue him from being trapped beneath the Tsuchinoko pit once she dealt with the Tsuchinoko. After matters with the Kito Family, the Tsuchinoko, and the Evil Eye were settled, Momo immediately rushed to the Tsuchinoko pit to save Okarun and was in complete distress when she returned to see that the pit was filled with magma. After managing to save him with Chiquitita’s help, Momo hugged him in relief that he stayed alive. Her friendship with Okarun can be looked at as being special compared to her other friends. Ever since she said goodbye to him after his temporary stay at her house was over, Momo decided that they should take turns saying goodbye to each whenever he left her house.
As the series progressed, Momo gradually showed hints that she was developing feelings for Okarun from their time spent together. From the start of their friendship on, there had been various instances in which Momo started blushing whenever she was with Okarun or if matters concerned him. Despite believing that it would be unlikely for Okarun to associate himself with another girl other than herself, Momo was slightly concerned after picturing Aira in her head and had an unexplainable uneasiness that almost made her want to go check on him. After Okarun's incident with Aira, Momo felt deeply upset and depressed with the scene engraved into her head while sitting in class. During the fight against the Serpo, Okarun noticed that Momo was more bothered by the fact that he was seeing another girl behind her back rather than him being a liar, which Momo tried to deny. After defeating the Serpo, Momo became flustered upon learning from Okarun that he was training in private to impress her and found it hard to respond to him due to what she had to say caused her to be filled with emotion. This response was unfortunately cut by the sudden arrival of Miko and Muko. This moment may have also hinted to Momo that Okarun was also developing feelings for her as well, as she started to tease him about his reason for training. Upon seeing Okarun coming in on her first day of work as a waitress with Miko and Muko, Momo reacted with embarrassment being seen by him in her work uniform.
After the conflicting events involving the Kito Family, the Tsuchinoko, and the Evil Eye, Momo's growing feelings towards Okarun started to become more apparent in her actions. During the ride to check in on Jiji's parents at the hospital, Momo playfully touched Okarun's hand as she was placing it on top, having been unbothered by him accidentally touching her hand earlier. Later, after Okarun unexpectedly came to pick her up from work late at night, Momo held onto his hand as they walked together, telling him that it would help keep them warm in the cold atmosphere. The two would then go on to occasionally hold hands together without any sign of objection from either party. Momo also developed other physical tendencies, such as punching and poking Okarun whenever a situation with him gets her flustered. When it was time to stop the Kur from initiating their invasion, Momo left Okarun a plate of curry for when he woke up from his unconscious state and a note saying "love ya!" that she wrote on impulse.
Reiko Kashima's vendetta against Momo caused the latter to realize that deep down she has strong romantic feelings for Okarun. To lure her out of bed, Reiko Kashima imitated Okarun's voice and made a false love confession based on her spying and observation of Momo's special interactions with the young man, along with her heart glancing ability. This almost worked in her favor as Momo became tempted to see Okarun face-to-face to have him confess to her directly. Although she realized on time that it was a trap, Momo was left disappointed and baselessly angry at the real Okarun the next day. Despite harboring these feelings, Reiko Kashima noted that Momo had a problem of being straightforward and honest with herself. Rather than this, Momo was more eager to have Okarun take the initiative in admitting to her that he has romantic feelings towards her as well. After stopping the Kur invasion, Momo became flustered with embarrassment having remembered the "love ya!" note she left for Okarun and was eager to have him bring up this subject.
Recently, in ch 159, Okarun was not letting go off Momo's hand when she was telling him to let go. He kept holding her hand and told her that he loves her and doesn't want to be separated again from her. She blushes and lets go of his hand and tells him to confess to her after she comes out from the game. And makes him promise this many times, making it clear that she has feelings for him as well.
Miko and Muko
Miko and Muko are two of Momo's closest friends at school prior to her friendship with Okarun and other schoolmates. As the ones Momo usually hangs around with at school, when not discussing paranormal matters with her colleagues, Miko and Muko know her very well and often look out for her, such as having warned her not to get involved with her crude ex-boyfriend and helped her to get a job at Moe Moe Kikoho. They also often enjoy teasing her, which occurred when they caught her accidentally locking lips with Okarun, presuming that he was her new boyfriend. After she got a job at Moe Moe Kikoho, Momo became mad with them for playfully taunting her as their server, especially for embarrassing her in front of Okarun after they dragged him there.
Family
Turbo Granny
The Turbo Granny is a yokai who once resided in a tunnel located at Shono City. She was the first yokai who was antagonistic to Momo and Okarun but wounded up becoming somewhat of an ally after the Turbo Granny Arc, having accepted Momo's deal to help her search for Okarun's kintama in exchange for getting her powers back. The two continue to share an antagonistic relationship but have been able to work as allies. The Turbo Granny dislikes Momo, given how she bested her in their past confrontation, but is willing to cooperate. Momo hated the yokai for harming Seiko with a curse and swore to defeat her but no longer seems to hold a grudge against her ever since their alliance.
Aira Shiratori
Momo shares a complicated relationship with the former school celebrity, Aira Shiratori. Initially, the two shared an antagonistic relationship, as Aira made it her mission to defeat Momo after first witnessing and interpreting the manifestation of her psychic power as her being an evil devil. However, by the Serpo Arc, the two have turned into allies that often bicker with each other, with Aira changing her perspective to seeing herself as the "leader" of Momo's small group that occasionally comes face to face with the paranormal.
Momo first met Aira at school where she saw her seemingly being friendly with Okarun. After overhearing her conversation with her friends on how she was simply playing with Okarun's feelings, Momo retaliated by using her powers to drop a basin on top of her head, along with making a sniping remark as she comes to Okarun's side. This action resulted in Momo exposing her powers to Aira, as the girl had recently awakened her spiritual awareness after picking up one of Okarun's kintama at the time. After seeing Momo's manifested power, Aira came to view her as an evil enemy that she must stop, with one of her tactics being to restrain and exorcise her at an abandoned warehouse, along with spreading a nasty rumor about her at school.
Following Acrobatic Silky's assault on Aira, Momo and Okarun try to protect Aira from the yokai and revive her after she was eaten by her. Momo then invited Aira to her house to apologize for dropping the basin on her head but demanded that she to apologize to Okarun for her ill intentions when they first met. Aira then told Momo that she didn’t hold a grudge against her for this action. Rather, she believed that she was meant to stop her from committing evil deeds as a savior. Having failed to get through to her, Momo played along by taking up Aira's challenge to see if she could defeat her.
Momo encountered Aira again after catching her with Okarun in a suspiciously sleazy situation in private, causing her to get upset. Later, after the Serpo appeared at their school to capture Okarun, the two had no other choice but to fight alongside each other to defeat the aliens. After defeating them and ended up being exposed at school, Aira came up with the idea of blaming the embarrassing scene on Momo. However, after feeling guilty for anonymously spreading the false rumor about Momo, Aira could not go through with her plan and, at the cost of her popularity, confessed to her classmates about being the one to spread the rumor about Momo. The two then met again after Momo had found Aira outside their school sulking alone, which indicated to her that Aira told the truth to her classmates.
Momo and Aira are shown to often have conflicts with each other, including comedically throwing insults. While finding her irritating to deal with, Momo can tolerate her to some extent since she sees her as someone she can rely on when in a distressing situation, with a great example being her asking Aira for help in preventing the Evil Eye from manifesting out of Jiji. She also knows that Aira is not completely antagonistic toward her, having figured out that she did not go through with badmouthing her to her classmates after the Serpo attack. It should also be noted that while she often clashes with Aira whenever she acts rude in some way, Momo talks to her casually without a hint of hostility in her voice and cares for her well-being, as she was stunned to see her taking a hit from Bamora in her enlarged kaiju suit.
Come the Kur's attempted invasion of Earth, Momo and Aira's dynamic with each other have shown signs of improvement to where they are on much friendly terms. Their occasional bickering seemed to have downgraded, and instead, the two have started to express more care and concern for one another. Along with Okarun and Jiji, Momo became distraught to find Aira badly injured at her house from being confronted by the Kur and was later relieved that she was okay enough to move again. After the Kur had been defeated, Momo tearfully hugged both Aira and Bamora in relief that they made it out of the battle alive. Momo also does not seem to mind that Aira started going on a first name basis with her, considering that the only people allowed are either her family or a close friend.
Jiji is Momo's childhood friend and first crush with whom she previously lost touch after he had moved away when they were little. They know each other personally quite well and often look out for each other.
Before the two parted ways, Momo's friendship with Jiji ended up being damaged after the latter included himself in being one of the boys who mocked her for performing Seiko's routine ritual, leaving Momo with the impression that he disliked her. By her high school year, Momo reunited with Jiji after Seiko agreed to have him stay at her house temporarily until an evil spirit that haunted his house got exorcised. Regretting his past mistake of making fun of her when they were kids, Jiji sincerely apologized to Momo for his past mistake and doubted to himself if he was ever that good of a friend to her back then. By the time his problems were solved, the two had managed to rekindle their friendship.
When he first came to the Ayase house's doorstep, Momo found Jiji's quirkiness to be irritating to deal with and was not yet back to being on friendly terms with him as they were in the past, as she objected to him staying at her house and felt uncomfortable being seated next to him at school. After spending some more time with him, Momo soon came to enjoy his company and has shown to care for his well-being, saving him from falling down the Tsuchinoko's lair and becoming worried that the Evil Eye was possessing him to harm people. To avoid awakening the Evil Eye within him, Momo supported him by agreeing to carry around hot water with her to suppress the yokai along with Okarun, Aira, and Seiko, and assisted in his training to control his ki. By the time Jiji's problem with the Evil Eye was solved, Momo had included Jiji in her small circle to find Okarun's missing kintama.
Momo treats Kinta harshly, often finding his desperate attempts to win over the affections of women, whether it be herself or the others, cringe-inducing. She also considers him to be a hinderance, as although he has shown his skillset in several combative encounters, she generally doesn't accept his efforts to help. Although she is justified in her distaste for him on most occasions, there are times where the source of Momo's vitriol is unfounded, with the primary example being how she gets mad at him for his frequent use of innuendo; a trait Kinta picked up from Momo due to her not explaining what she actually meant when referring to the kintama. Despite all this, Momo still allows Kinta as a member of The Family and allows him to help out on occasion.
As he's a member of the same species that nearly sexually assaulted her, Momo doesn't show much outward kindness towards Rokuro, and frequently assumes the worst of him. This even includes cases where Rokura directly tries to assist her in the midst of combat. Deep down, however, Momo is very grateful for his resourcefulness and believes he's a good person despite being a Serpo, though she only admits this when she believes he's dead. Upon learning that he survived, her distrust of him resumed, albeit at a more minor extent than before
American Dad! is an American animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series moved to TBS for its twelfth season in 2014 and continues to air new episodes to this day.[2][3] American Dad! is the first television series made to premiere on Fox's Animation Domination block.[4] The series premiered on February 6, 2005, following Super Bowl XXXIX, with the rest of the first season airing from May 1, 2005.[5][6]
Creative direction of American Dad! had largely been guided by Barker (prior to his departure from the show in season 10) and Weitzman as opposed to MacFarlane, resulting in a series that is different from its counterparts.[7] Unlike MacFarlane's other shows, Family Guy and, to a lesser extent, The Cleveland Show, American Dad! does not lean as heavily on the use of cutaway gags, and is less concerned with conventional "setup-punchline" jokes,[3] instead deriving its humor mostly from the quirky characters, the relationships between family members, and the relatively relatable plots.[2] While the core issues and resolutions are relatable in most episodes, the show nonetheless weaves in fantastical elements, pitching the tone of the show somewhere between observational comedy and farce.[3] The plots are often absurd, but grounded by family stories and real-world issues.[3]
American Dad! has been nominated for numerous awards, including four Primetime Emmy Awards and two Annie Awards. In June 2013, it was awarded as top television series by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Since its debut, American Dad! has broadcast 381 episodes (as of February 3, 2025). The total number of seasons and organization of episodes within those seasons are in dispute due to discrepancies in how official sources report this information. One model suggests the first season of American Dad! comprises the first seven episodes, while another model suggests the first season comprises 23 episodes.[8]
Beginning on October 20, 2014, TBS picked up the series for the 12th season following the final three episodes airing on Fox as the 11th season. TBS, TruTV, and Adult Swim, (all owned by Warner Bros. Discovery), air reruns of the series. On December 16, 2021, the series was renewed for seasons 20 and 21. The 20th season premiered on March 27, 2023.[9] The 21st season premiered on October 28, 2024.[10][11]
The series focuses on the eccentric upper middle class Smith family in a fictionalized version of Langley, Virginia and their four housemates:[3] Father, husband, CIA agent, Republican, and breadwinner Stan; his wife and homemaker/housewife, Francine; their liberal, hippie, college-aged daughter, Hayley; and their dorky high-school-aged son, Steve. There are four additional main characters, including Hayley's dimwitted boyfriend and later husband, Jeff Fischer; the family's unusual goldfish, Klaus, who has the brain of an East German athlete; Roger, the alien, who is a flamboyant, hedonistic, self-serving master of disguise; and Roger's ex-tumor son Rogu.[12][13] Stan's boss Avery Bullock, the Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, is a recurring character.

Main article: List of American Dad! characters
American Dad! centers on the absurd circumstances, adventures and domestic life of its title character Stan Smith, his immediate family, and their four housemates. Adding to all the ridiculousness and absurdity are the various personality traits of all the show's eccentric main characters, listed as follows:
Seth MacFarlane voices Stan Smith (husband/father) and Roger Smith (alien)
Wendy Schaal voices Francine Smith (wife/mother)
Scott Grimes voices Steve Smith (Stan and Francine's son)
Rachael MacFarlane voices Hayley D. Smith-Fischer (Stan and Francine's daughter)
Dee Bradley Baker voices Klaus Heisler (the Smiths' man-in-a-fish-body pet) and Rogu (Roger's ex-tumor son)
Jeff Fischer voices the character of Jeff Fischer (Hayley's boyfriend, then husband)
Patrick Stewart voices Deputy Director Avery Bullock (Stan's boss)
American Dad! had a mid-season debut. Its first episode, titled "Pilot", was originally shown directly following Super Bowl XXXIX on February 6, 2005. The rest of the first season, however, would not launch until May 1, 2005, as part of the debut of Fox's Animation Domination lineup.[6][3][16] Initially, it was a replacement for the originally failed series Family Guy (1999–2002). American Dad! was originally intended to be Fox's answer to the hordes of fans left behind from the original failure of MacFarlane's previous animated venture.[2] Just three short months after American Dad!'s debut however, Family Guy was revived, leaving American Dad! with a formidable expectation: whether the series could distinguish itself from its counterpart and succeed on its own merits.[2] Instead of taking over creative direction of the series, MacFarlane left the job largely in the hands of Barker and Weitzman so as to distinguish American Dad![7]
