EVIL DEAD 2 ! movie of all time im serious. this movie is so much fun, its a direct continuation of its first installment but i dont even really recommend watching that one too much; its a great movie and its hilarious in its own way but i think it misses some of the slapstick comedy and ridiculousness that separates evil dead 2 from the b-movie horror genre. you know how a lot of horror movies from the 70's-80's are really slowly paced and take forever to get to the point and by the time they do you've lost the plot and dont even remember the main character's name? ED2 is the complete opposite of that experience. the director, sam raimi, was also director for the 2002-2007 spiderman trilogy with tobey maguire !
TRAINSPOTTING ... i think this is just a super entertaining movie. its hard to believe its only 94 minutes long, the pacing is amazing and the amount of stories and characters it manages to include SUCCESSFULY is so impressive to me. its about this character, Renton dealing with drug addiction, trying to get clean and navigating social life. for the most part, i'd say this movie is objectively pretty hard to stomach, taking into account all the feces and vomit in the film, along with some touchy subjects in general (renton's very teenage girlfriend and a dead baby) its the fact that this movie feels so raw that makes it so great. its entirely full of life. also, the movie is based on the novel by irvine welsh that inspired my chemical romance's name !
Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN. this movie blew my mind when i first watched it, it depicts the bond between two best friends as they go on a road trip to a beach they know nothing about with an older woman who they also know nothing about, they just think she's hot. along the way, they discover things about each other that never would have seen the light of day otherwise. this movie has a narrator (the director) that follows the trio and reveals certain truths about their environment or their past. little anecdotes that add context to the character's lives. its such a beautifully made film, so personal. however, if you are gonna watch it beware of the 5 billion sex scenes, including the one at the very beginning of the movie ! ive never had to lower my volume at such speeds. also, its all in spanish, and i know for a fact that much of its humor would be lost in translation, so keep that in mind !
NAKED LUNCH ! my top four has shifted around a couple times over the past few years but naked lunch by david cronenberg has definitely fought well for its prolonged spot on the list. this is the work of one of my favorite directors and its here because of how densely packed it is with absurdity. its another movie based on a book, this time by the poet, william s. burroughs, which is a semi autobiographical tale of drug abuse and authority. its not linear at all and is pretty goddamn difficult to make sense of sometimes. the movie, still pretty confusing, is about an exterminator turned writer who is forced to navigate a world of absolute madness after accidentally killing his wife during a drug induced high. theres giant alien creatures who talk and typewriters made from live insects who Also speak. this movie is confusing, queer, and bizzare. brilliant cinematography and special effects.
