blehhh The joule is defined as the energy transferred when a force of one newton acts through a displacement of one meter in the direction of the force. Torque, however, is a measure of how much a force causes an object to rotate — it involves the perpendicular lever arm, not displacement in the direction of the force. A torque can be applied without any movement (static case), so it isn’t energy. That’s why, even though torque has units N·m, we don’t call it joules. |
