Marmatier's Interests

General

I collect things like memories, things that rattle when you pick them up, cultural jewelry, and people who don't flinch when things get weird. I'm soft for tragic NPCs and enemies with lore. If you hand me a sword, I won’t ask questions. I love forgotten places, dusty cabinets, glitched textures, and the moment right before a storm hits. I’m probably either deep in a game, deep in a book, deep in a rabbit hole about medieval funeral rites, or holding something and wondering if it remembers its previous owner. If something looks like it belongs in a drawer that hasn’t been opened since the 1600s, I probably already tried to steal it.

Music

I listen to a mix of things depending on my mood... Maryam Saleh, Cocteau Twins, System of a Down, Simon & Garfunkel, Talking Heads, and Bedouin Burger are regulars. I really love Arabic and North African artists like Ibrahim El Hasnawi, Sofiane Saidi, and Rim Banna. Califato ¾ and Orchestra Baobab are in the rotation too. I like stuff that blends older styles with something more experimental. I’m also into early music in general, like ars nova, motets, troubadour and touvere, minnesang, rococo, and baroque.

Movies

I don’t watch a ton of films, but Mary and Max is probably my favorite. I love how it's uncomfortable in the right ways, quiet but devastating. And Fantastic Planet for its visuals, its weirdness, and the fact that it feels like a dream you only remember in pieces. I love short films more than full-length ones.

Television

I’m into shows that mix humor, chaos, and just a little bit of darkness. Malcolm in the Middle and Everybody Hates Chris are my comfort food. Desperate Housewives, Devious Maids, and Gossip Girl hit the drama and intrigue sweet spots with a side of guilty pleasure. When it comes to anime, I’m drawn to the older stuff (especially mahou shoujo series) like Minky Momo and Yadamon that balance whimsy with something uncanny. I also like Paranoia Agent, Galaxy Express 999, House of Five Leavesg, Daddy Long Legs and Oniisama e...

Books

I’m into feminist literature, magic realism, Arthurian myths, and detective fiction with a good plot twist. Occult and weird fiction also pull me in when the world feels too ordinary. Favorites include The City & The City for its strange, overlapping realities, The Hearing Trumpet for its humor and heart, and Mr. Fox for its dark fairy-tale vibe. Chocolat and The Night Circus bring that lush, magical feel, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde explores the shadows we all carry. I also like the poetic oddness of Opus 7, the sharp social commentary in Pride and Prejudice, and the biting critiques in Death of a Salesman and Catch-22. Also, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead because sometimes the side characters have the best stories.

Heroes

Some of my heroes are Valerie Solanas and Catharine MacKinnon for their strong feminist voices. I admire the Redstockings and Françoise d’Eaubonne for their activism and dedication to change. Mona Eltahawy is someone I respect for speaking out boldly. I also look up to historical figures like Margery Kempe and Christine de Pizan, who were ahead of their time. I’m inspired by groups like the Levellers and Diggers, and movements like the Marquis, Herbertists, and the Baguines, who challenged traditional power structures.
