Note to Self: Nostalgia is a beautiful liar. It shows you highlight reels while hiding all the reasons things ended. You scroll through old photos, replay conversations, and convince yourself that what's gone was better than what remains. But clinging to memories keeps you trapped between worlds physically here but mentally living in moments that no longer exist. You're giving your present away to ghosts who have already moved on with their lives. The hardest truth is that you're often remembering alone. While you're analyzing every detail of what used to be, they've created new stories that don't include you. They've found peace by letting go of what you still hold onto. Your mind wasn't designed to live in the past. It was made for right now for building new connections, for healing, for growing beyond what was. The memories worth keeping are the ones that gently inform your future, not the ones that hold it hostage. Let the past stay where it belongs. Today needs you more.

About Me

Welcome! Call me Yams (23 y/o - a 2000s kid through and through). Collecting, sharing, archiving, and writing are all hobbies of mine, borne out of a deep-seated sensitivity throughout life and an overactive imagination. I'm a foodie at heart with a love of hosting, and value family time. The concept of writing about myself sometimes feels awkward, as I prefer to zoom out and away from myself to peer into some of my more "niche" interests. Hopefully you'll get a feel for who I am through my layout and visuals. Happy Scrolling!

The shortest poem is a name.

The story behind my username... Picture this. It's early June 2010, and little Yams with her missing two front teeth is a month away from turning 8 years old. It's eventually settled that the birthday party will be held at a glow-in-the-dark mini-golf course on a Sunday with all her school friends, complete with a Costco cake, a frilly green frock with white stockings, and a booming recession pop playlist in the background. My username commemorates this joyful little memory that I continue to hold dear! Of the random things I recall from that day, I spotted an Adam Lambert poster whose edginess once made me nervous as a shy little kid (as did emos back in the day), heard Taio Cruz playing in the background, the manicure set one of my friends had gifted me, and the vivid balloons in primary colours iced in thick circles on the birthday cake. In my innocence at the time, I eventually dubbed June 13th my "fake birthday." The sun was in my eyes, my cheeks were still flushed from running around all day... Coming home that evening was a breeze.

Interests

  • Writing on Substack
  • Coding my Spacehey
  • Adding collages and mementos to my art journal
  • Spending time with family (and my cat!)
  • Being a foodie around downtown
  • Taking quizzes on Quotev
  • Listening to podcasts online
  • Roblox (Hunger Games, Prisonbreak, Sushi Shop Simulator)
  • Playing flash games online (Barbie, MyScene, Sky Breeze, GGG, Addicting Games, Miniclip, Disney, Nick, Stardoll)
  • Crafting (mostly embroidery and watercolouring)
  • Researching random topics on the internet
  • Pretending I'm niche and obscure (self-awareness ftw)
  • Nostalgia (fashion, taking digicam pics, living like it's 2009)

Music

I treat music like a mood ring with a plot twist, turning every hangout into a little cinematic moment. My taste swings from riot-grrrl chaos to silky 2000s R&B, from indie dreamscapes to post-internet sad rap, with detours through club anthems and unapologetic pop bangers, but that doesn't make me a genre-hopper. I search for depth, authenticity, and even catharsis in music, and I love sounds... even the strange ones. (LOL) Basically, I take what I like, and I go deep with it. One track might have you dancing like it’s 2 A.M. in a sweaty club, the next might make you feel like the main character in a gritty indie film. Up here (in my head), every track is part of a bigger plot. If you’re in my orbit, I’m scoring the moment, whether you realize it or not, going beyond just the passenger DJ or playlist-curator for a house party.

Hobbies

Amateur photography (2011 Canon Powershot ELPH 300 HS). Badminton. Baking. Blogging. Cooking. Collecting things. Conspiracy theories. Deep convos. Embroidery. Exploring music genres. Hiking. Journaling. Mixed-media collages. Podcasting. Re-watching old faves. Wandering downtown. Writing. Travelling.

Friends

I keep a small group of friends and consider myself to be a floater. My sibling is my best friend, though I have always been a naturally friendly, inclusive person with a strong dislike for bullying, fake people, and mind games. Ugh, girlhood! Aside from that, family is everything to me. Oh, and I'm not the best texter. I'd actually rather you call me up... My social battery is everything to me :)

My Fave Barbie Movies

  • Barbie Diaries (2006)
  • Barbie as the Island Princess (2007)
  • Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)
  • Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)
  • Barbie of Swan Lake (2003)

The Physical Media Manifesto

  • If you can’t hold it in your hand, you don’t own it.
  • Guard your out-of-print, weird, and region-locked treasures.
  • What is here today can be deleted tomorrow without warning.
  • Let your collection stand as a monument to freedom and taste.
  • Maintain your players, rewinders, and CRTs as if they are lifelines to the past.
  • The original case, insert art, and disc label are part of the soul.
  • Wi-Fi may die, clouds may vanish, but your collection won't.
  • If it has weight, it has worth. (Probably, because the world's still cruel)
