>> Another book worth mentioning (on my mind right now for whatever reason) is something I read in High School, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. If you might like a novel about ancient human life thru the eyes of a female character thoughout her life, check it out.

>> I also suggest the Abhorsen trilogy (Garth Nix) if you like the sound of magic zombies and world adventure and braving the circles of hell in an almost Final-Fantasy-feeling world/story.
