On June 6, 1944, the world changed forever with the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France—known as D-Day.

This massive operation was part of Operation Overlord during World War II, and it became one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history.

Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy under intense fire, facing heavily fortified German defenses. By the end of the day, the cost of freedom was staggering—Allied casualties were at least 10,000, including approximately 4,414 confirmed dead. German casualties have been estimated between 4,000 and 9,000 men.

But beyond the numbers is the deeper story: ordinary soldiers from different nations coming together to confront tyranny, knowing the risks, and still pressing forward. Their sacrifice marked the beginning of the end for Nazi control in Western Europe and helped turn the tide of the war.

Today, D-Day stands as a reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the high price of freedom.

There’s something that’s been weighing on me about recovery spaces like AA and NA, especially as a musician.

For a program that’s supposed to be about inclusion, healing, and connection, it often feels like musicians and creatives get pushed to the outside. The culture can lean judgmental at times, and instead of feeling understood, it can feel like you have to shrink parts of who you are just to fit in. That’s not recovery—that’s isolation in a different form.

Music isn’t a side hobby for some of us. It’s how we process life. It’s how we stay grounded. It’s how we survive. When that part of us isn’t welcomed or is treated like it doesn’t belong, it creates a disconnect that can actually push people closer to relapse, not further away from it.

I’ll be real—there have been moments where that disconnect has made things harder than they needed to be. Feeling excluded when you’re trying to stay sober is a dangerous place to be.

It’s especially disappointing to see the EZ Duz It Center move away from including musicians in recovery. That decision doesn’t just affect performers—it affects the people who found hope, connection, and healing through music in that space. Pushing singer-songwriters and musicians away is a mistake, and over time, I think it’s something that will be felt.

Musicians in recovery matter. Creatives in recovery matter. We bring something real to the table—honesty, vulnerability, and connection through art. That should never be pushed aside.

I’m choosing to protect my recovery in a way that actually supports who I am, not strips it down. I hope one day these spaces grow to truly include all paths of healing—including the ones that come with a guitar, a voice, and a story to tell.
