What made something gothic? When I think about goth, I think about part of humanity’s natural inclination to revel in the morose; a need to understand the suffering life deals us. The word itself also once implied the barbaric and crude. The goal of this book is to create a colorful, bitesize timeline of what goth has meant over the course of its existence, attempting to highlight the places where gothic inspiration is hidden and linger, especially within the history of African-American life and culture. My word is not law, but I hope it can spark some constructive and enlightening dialog."

J.W. Thurston is the published author of four books, and an independent researcher and cultural critic. They have released two books of poetry, been featured in poet Lora Mathis's Radical Softness zine, was published in SPCE's LOVEbook chapbook series, The Eclectic Performing Arts Company's Kindle chapbook Inflection, and was a guest writer for BritpopNews.com. J.W. also has contributed art to local protests/political causes, sold and designed clothes, designed webpages, and electronic press kits, curated music for events, and has written short biographies for Barbara Jean Addams (nee Day), and rapper Junglepussy. J.W. is currently working with the educational group The Blues & Beyond as a teacher of gothic blues, as well as performing spoken word at TBB events.
